The national fair is in town
the fair is in town. This is
the week of the Georgia
National Fair in Perry. Have
you been? I am not one for
rides. My enjoyment at the fair
is the exhibits and the people,
but especially the fotxl: the fun
nel cakes and the roasted com
and the apple dumplings and
the onion rings and the turkey
legs Have you made plans to
attend? If so, when did you
make those plans and how
much will it cost to fulfill those
plans?
When I was growing up in
rural Georgia, anticipation of
the county fair began in the
summer and talk of the fair
continued long after. Young
people worked in the fields
during the summer for school
money and for fair money.
My father was not an advo
cate of those fairs. Whenever
he voiced opposition to the
fairs, those organizations sup
porting fairs would point out
all of the money that local
groups raised. My father
would then correctly observe
that there was much more
money taken out of the small
local economy than was ever
put back.
AIDS in Africa - pressing needs
It is frightful, tragic, and
horrible, but the needs sur
rounding the AIDS epidemic
in Africa continues to grow. It
is hardly possible to count the
millions who are infected from
north to south on the "dark
continent And the
of children who are affected is
heart rending! The various
world health organizations
are furnishing supplies and
workers as is possible, but the
statistics and logistics stagger
the imagination!
The Monday morning

social strata are very quick to

Getting back to the fair,
when will you !*• going? How
many times will you go to the
fair? Will you make as much of
an effort to go to church next
Sunday as you will with your
fair plans? The purpose of the
fair and your church are differ
ent I really doubt your church
service will be as exciting to
the senses as the fair. Still, let
your commitment to church
attendance at least have the
priority of going to the fair.
Consider the following story.
A churchgoer wrote a letter
to the editor of the newspaper
and complained that it made
no sense to go to church every
Sunday. I've gone for 30 years
now,” he wrote, “and in that
time I have heard something
like 3,(XK) sermons. But for the
life of me I can’t remember a
single one of them. So I think

tics, the "system" All the

wake. Of course, there are
reasons for this great dilem
mo, not the least of which is
personal biological patterns of
carelessness and immorality,
And it is not likely to change,
We need to be especially
mindful of the youth, remind
mg all that this is not their
fault.
In light of the drastic

giving sermons at all."
This started a real contro
versy in the “letters to the Edi
tor" column, much to the
delight of the editor. It went on
for weeks until someone wrote
this clincher: Tve been mar
ried for 30 years now. In that
time my wife has cooked some
.52.000 meals. But for the life of
me, 1 cannot recall the entire
menu for a single one of those
meals. But I do know this:
They all nourished me and
gave me the strength I needed
to do my work. If my wife had
not given me those meals, I
would be physically dead today.
Likewise, if I had not gone to
church for nourishment, I
would be spiritually dead
today!”
