it will be successful and
on-going for many years.
The event will be held
at Southern Valley Ranch

that Queen Ruth began her
morning on the day of the
coronation at 7:30. “Too
early for a queen...” they
wrote. She had breakfast
with her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. A.J. Evans. She retired
to her boudoir to get dressed.
Her “toilet” was overseen by
her mother.
Everything to do with the
king and queen was fash

period. King Sam and
Queen the Ruth proceeded from
Evans home on College
and Miller Street to assume
their royal position for the
festival. They traveled by
carnage of purple and gold
with six black horses. An
open carriage pulled by gray
horses carried the ten court
ladies, flower girls and
pages. The courtiers rode
horses adorned with purple
and gold, as well.
The costumes for the entire
court were handmade by local
seamstresses. Queen Ruth’s
dress was gold with gold ruf
fles accented with rhinestones,
gold beads, and pearls.
She wore gold slippers. The
train to her gown was purple
silk and white ermine.
Even though the corona
tion was a highlight of the
day, the pageant was what
many came to see. More
seats were available this
year and now there was a
public address system by
which more could hear. The
pageant was broadcast by
WSB radio in Atlanta for the
first time and it was claimed
that even folks in Baltimore
heard the story played out.
Around 30,000 tickets to
the pageant were printed
to sell for one dollar. There
were over 1,000 characters
in the story. Fifteen hun¬

before the festival by Fort

The story of the “Trail
of Pink Petals” was set on
Mount Olympus. Mountains
were built in the fields in
front of the stands for the
audience. Two acres of small
pine saplings were cut down
to help with the backdrop
for the “stage”,
The story starts with
Pomona, the goddess of
fruit. Pomona is strongly
associated with the blos
soming of fruit rather
than the harvesting of it.
Therefore, this goddess fit
right in with the festival,
The pageant proceeds with
the progression of the peach

France, Spain and then on

Treasures.” However, Fort

of the Peach,
As a result of this long jour¬
ney and the bond between
Fort Valley and the Peach,
they marry. Yes, there is a
wedding. The bridesmaids
were 20 Georgia counties
where peaches were heavily
grown. As the wedding was
held, two planes flew over
dropping peach petals on the
crowd below.
The pageant ended with
the verse:
Behold! Great Georgia’s
favorite son!
The Peach regards him,
and the deed is done!
Fort Valley comes, with
love light in his eyes,
And woos and wins
Pomona’s richest prize!
She yields, she blushes,

The peach had once more
been heralded as the fruit
of the world and Fort Valley
was again the World’s Peach
Paradise. Everything had
gone off as planed. Now there
were even movies about the
Peach Blossom Festival for
the world to see.
It was said in places that
maybe as many as 60,000
came those two days in
March. Newspapers report¬
ed that 80% of the white
population of Fort Valley was
fully engaged in the prepara¬
tion ,for the 1925 festival.
However successful this fes¬
tival was, things were about
to change. The small rural
town with the magical fes¬
tival was approaching the
unthinkable. The next fete
Was only a year away and
some were wondering how
long could this go on with
each year’s events getting
larger and larger.
The answers would come
soon enough. They would
come soon enough.....
By the way, 1925 was the
year that Peach County
came into existence. It was
acknowledged and celebrat¬
ed at the festival. I am fully
convinced that the Peach
Blossom Festivals played a
part in the political creation
of the county. That, however,
is another story to be told
later.
