Flint Energies Well Prepared fer 2007
Hurricane Season That June 1

Energies is well-prepared for the
beginning of the 2007 hurricane
season, according to Flint Senior
Vice President Jimmy Autry.
“NOAA forecasters predict
an active Atlantic hurricane
season,” he said. “Experts at
NOAA’s Climate Prediction
Center say there’s a 75 per¬
cent chance that the Atlantic
hurricane season will be above
normal and are projecting 13 to
17 named storms, with 7 to 10
becoming hurricanes, of which
3 to 5 could reach Category 3
or higher.”
According to .NOAA, the sea¬
son will probably be near the
high end of those predictions if a
La Nina develops in the next few
months, Autry added. “NOAA’s
projection is generally backed up
by other forecasters,” said Autry.
“In April, the team at Colorado
State University (CSU) released
their latest forecast, which proj¬
ects 17 named storms, 9 hur¬
ricanes and 5 intense hurricanes.
The CSU team estimates a 75
percent chance of landfall of a
major hurricane somewhere on
the U.S. coast this year.”

JUNE 6, 2007
a hurricane could never
us this far inland, according
Autry. “One only has to
back to the floods in 1994,
1999 exodus from the coast
the wake of Hurricane
Hurricane Frances in 2004,
the Ft. Valley tornado in
spun off by Hurricane Katrina
know that we can be adversely
affected by a hurricane.”
After Hurricane Frances
2005, it took six days for all
Flint Energies’ members to
their power restored.
Many preparations have
made at the not-for-profit
tric cooperative, according
Autry:
1. A complete
Restoration Plan, mandated
the Rural Utilities Service
tested at least once a year
2. Membership in a
wide mutual aid agreement
more than 900 other
cooperatives. Flint can go to
its neighbors, or they can
here to help us. Mutual aid
came to Flint after
Frances and more recently
the Crawford County tornado
Mar. 1,2007
3. A fully stocked
house and a contingent
of restoration materials
LOCAL
4. Redundant supplies of
fuel for the trucks
5. A tried and tested sys¬
tem operations center manned
7x24
6. A reliable phone system
which uses the member’s caller
ID to answer 1800 simultaneous
outage report phone calls, when
the member provides their phone
number to the Flint database
7. 70 years of experience in
power restoration
Autry encouraged Flint
Energies members to make their
own preparations:
1. Prepare a family emer¬
gency kit as detailed in the Red
Cross guide at http://www.flin
tenergies.com/pdf/Family%20D
isaster%20Supply%20Kit.pdf
2 . Safety install a power
generator so that family mem¬
bers and Hint linemen are not
affected. Any generator should
be isolated from the power lines
or be equipped with a properly
installed double-throw switch
installed by a licensed electri¬
cian. Generators that are not
isolated or installed properly can
feed back into our lines and pos¬
sibly electrocute anyone being
exposed to those wires.
3. Be sure Flint has your up
to date phone numbers
4. Report any outage at
1-888-354-6836. Program that
number into your cell phone.
Have a least one phone at home
that is not cordless. (Cordless
phones do not work without
electricity)
5. Be prepared to move
to another location if power is
interrupted for longer lengths of
time. This includes anyone with
electric-powered health equip¬
ment and oxygen because Flint
cannot guarantee power at all
times.
