The able fac e of God
The Bible is clear that no man
has seen God. Mortal man cannot
look upon the face of God and
live. When Moses asked God, “I
pray thee, show me thy glory,”
God responded, “I will cause all
my goodness to pass before you,
and I will proclaim before you
my name...But, you cannot see
my face; for man shall not see
me and live... Behold, there is a
place near me where you shall
stand upon a rock; and when my
glory passes by, I will place you
in the cleft of the rock, and I will
cover you with my hand until I
have passed; then I will remove
my hand, and you shall see my
back, but my face you must not
see.
Ezekiel saw the heavens
open and observed visions of
God. Isaiah saw God sitting
on a throne, high and lifted up,
his train filling the temple. But
neither prophet actually saw
God’s face. “In unapproachable

Further, “God is a spirit,” and,
as such, is invisible unless He

marks of that encounter for the

Bible scholars speculate that
eye disease was Paul’s “thorn

prayed to God three times for
deliverance, yet unsuccessfully.
In his letter to the Galatians,
Paul mentions the large letters

suggests diminished vision.
