Fort Valley Police Lt. Randall
Harris and Cpl. Ron Barnhill
spent three days last week
teaching fellow officers a new
set of skills they all hope to
never use. They were teach¬
ing Active Shooter Response
training at Fort Valley State
University. Harris said the
Rapid Response concept was
developed after the shootings
at Columbine High School in
1999. The training prepares the
first four officers to arrive on
the scene involving an active
shooter to go directly to the vio¬
lence and stop it. Independent
studies have found that this
rapid response will save lives.

! The dedication of 1 the
Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial
. Parkway is scheduled for
Saturday April 11 at 1 p.m. It
will take place at the northeast
comer of Russell Parkway and
1-75.
The heart of the ceremo¬
ny will be the reading of 73
area servicemen killed in
action in Vietnam according
to Department of Defense
records. The names will
include residents of Perry, Fort
Valley, Macon and Warner
Robins.
A highlight of the ceremony
will be a flyover of Blackhawk
helicopters, arranged by
Maj. Kelly Brown, a Warner
Robins High School graduate
and 1995 West Point graduate.
Maj. Brown, who did tours
in South Korea and Iraq as a
Blackhawk pilot, will com¬
mand the flyover from the
ground.
Following the ribbon-cut
ting ceremony, motorcycle
clubs will ride in a “miss¬
ing man” formation along the
length of the Vietnam Veteran’s
Memorial Parkway.

first arriving officers to set up
a perimeter and wait for the
SWAT Team to arrive and con¬
front the shooter.
“We are giving officers the
tools they need to survive a
situation like this,” Harris said
Thursday. “We are asking them
to take SWAT’s last option and
make it their first. This is com¬
pletely unnatural from anything
they have been trained to do.”
The training was held at Fort
Valley State in order to teach
the methods to all the agencies
that would be involved in such
a situation.
“You go with the first four
officers to respond; one might
be from Fort Valley State, one
from Fort Valley, a deputy and
a guy from Byron. You want
to be sure everyone is using
the same tactics; they all have
communications commonality;

everyone is on the same page
of music,” explained Harris
before class resumed Thursday
afternoon. This week’s classes
included FVSU Campus Police
officers and Fort Valley Police
officers.
Harris said the studies have
shown that any kind of pre¬
event training and planning
would greatly enhance suc¬
cess when the real thing hap¬
pens. Peach County deputies
and Byron Police officers have
already been training, as has
the SERT Team of which Harris
and Barnhill are members.
“We want everyone to react
the same and come in and work
together.” said Harris.
The training is in preparation
for an upcoming disaster drill
in the county that will involve
an active shooter scenario.
