When she first brought it up,
mentioning it in passing more
than anything else, I thought
she was joshing so I shrugged
it pff with a smile. Fortunately,
I did not make any wisecrack
that I would now regret.
But I've never known anyone
who admitted to being a food
addict. I am sure I know other
food addicts - one specifically
comes to mind - but I do not
know of anyone else who is in
recovery, diligently following
a 12-step program. I believe
she is an extraordinarily brave
person. Most of us who love
food too much just whine about
the lack of willpower and then
hid the evidence behind baggy
clothes.
Over lunch with three girl¬
friends, I told the story and
they, too, listened in amaze¬
ment but it did not induce any
of us to order calorie-reduced
meals. I ended the story with the
pronouncement that I believe
that every person is addicted to
something.
“I’m not,” Penelope Ann was
quick to declare. “I have com¬
plete control.”
I narrowed my eyes. “You’re
addicted to vanity.” The other
girls laughed. “You’re com¬
pletely obsessed with how you

look. If you put that much
effort toward helping the poor
and disenfranchised, we’d call
you Mother Teresa."
“Speaking of that," she
said. “Did you notice the new
color of highlights in my hair?
Victor said that I should darken
them a bit for the season.”
Claudette spoke up. “Okay,
Miss Know-It-All, what am I
addicted to?”
I smiled. Claudette is the one
who is always looking for a
good deed to do even when
she already has too much to
do. “You’re addicted to helping
people. You go overboard with
it because you’re always worn
out and stretched to the max.
You get some kind of high out
of it. Maybe doing good for
others makes you feel good
about yourself. At least momen¬
tarily. A temporary fix.”
Claudette could not dispute
it since she had just rattled off
all the casseroles and cakes she
had baked in the last two days
and how she was taking her
elderly neighbor to her doctor’s
appointment.
Carrie Beth had been quiet
throughout the conversation
but was nervously tapping two
fingers together as she often
does when she is anxious. I
ignored her and went on with
my own self-diagnosis.
“I’m a workaholic,” I said.
Penelope Ann rolled her eyes.
“Of course, you would have a
noble addiction of some kind.
Oh, puh-leaze.”
“It’s not noble,” I replied.
“I’m not balanced. I do not have
enough control to stop myself
from working at a decent hour

Penelope Ann, because you
can always count on her to
never let anyone off the hook,
piped up with, "What is Carrie
Beth’s addiction? And please
don’t tell me that it’s wearing
the same shade of lipstick for
the last 10 years. That’s ridicu¬
lous not addictive.”
I laughed. Carrie Beth’s life
is in a constant state of turmoil.
There is rarely peace and calm
with her. “She’s addicted to bad
decisions and the chaos that
results from them. She thrives
on disorder.”
“I don’t thrive on it,” she
demurred softly. “It’s just the
way my life is.”
“Yes, but when you ask our
advice on something and we
tell you the best thing to do, you
always do the other,” Claudette
pointed out. “You always pick
the worse solution possible.
Don’t make us have to name
them. I can $ink of two in the
past four days.”
Our own addictions acknowl¬
edged and discussed, we moved
on to our analysis of other
people we know. In fact, this
discussion has now continued
for over two weeks.
I guess you could call it our
new addiction.

Well, have mercy dear
readers. That ’ole black cat is
back on my doorstep and I’m
right before giving him his per¬
manent walking papers. Got
a bid of bad news from the
doctor this week. Seems he
has to operate on me again for
the breast cancer. He and the
oncology radiologist feel there
may be a few remaining cells in
the margin around the cancer so
they have decided to go in and
remove them. Better to be safe
than sorry, they said.
I’m not exactly chomping at
the bit to have another opera¬
tion, but if I get along as well
with the upcoming one as I did
the first, I should have few prob¬
lems. I have suffered minimal
pain; have had neither fever nor
nausea. I must admit however,
that having radiation every day
for five weeks sounds like a
little much since it tends to
weaken the body, but the alter¬
native is to have radiation twice
a day for one week and be done
with it. That sounds better
except radiation is a burn and I
don’t know about being burned
in the same place twice a day.
That makes me a bit antsy. I
will do what I am told, however,
and get the show on the road so
I can get this knee replaced and
become a real, living, walking
human again.
You should see my house.

Got a new walker on wheels
the other day and that thing
will scoot like the wind. Since
the speed is up to me, some¬
times I get a little careless. To
make a long story short, I’ve
skinned every door facing in
the house. After 1 have my knee
operation and will no longer
need a walker. I’ll have to have
the entire inside of the house
painted. That was not in my
financial plan. There goes my
vacation to Austria that I can’t
afford any way. Rats!
By the way, the cat I share
with Calvin Pierce, my next
door neighbor, continues to
work both sides of the street.
She is getting so fat she drags
the ground and acts like she’s
starving to death all the time.
This week she decided to get
lost. I looked for her all day,
calling out the door several
times. In the late afternoon she
came yawning into the kitchen
(to eat again, of course). She
had slept in my office chair all
day long. Since it was dark in
there I couldn’t see her in my
chair. That cat has no con¬
science. I think the name is
rotten and I don’t even allow
animals in my house.
It’s bad enough for old folks
to get conned by others but
when I get conned by a cat I
may need to take a little closer

up-to-date self-help books.
I want to thank all of you
wonderful readers, peers,
friends, and probably an enemy
or two, for all the beautiful
cards last week. How very
thoughtful and they each gave
me a warm-fuzzy. We must not
forget the bearers of food who
came. Para Vinson filled my
freezer with homemade frozen
dinners. Helen Major brought
food enough for three days, plus
a couple of cakes I really did
need for my hips. Connie Short
was the first one here. I told
you she would be. She brought
a to-die-for casserole with all
the trimmings that lasted three
meals. Peggy Cranford brought
several meals and a pan of real
homemade biscuits. Bad thing
about her gift was the biscuits
only lasted two days. It couldn’t
have been that I sopped syrup
like a pig, could it?
I feel so pampered it was
almost worth getting sick for.
I just wish it could have been
an ingrown toenail instead of
cancer. But that’s o.k. We’re
gonna make it.
Keep me in your prayers on
the 6th as the doctor operates
again. I am in the care of
the Great Physician, therefore, I
have no fear.
Blessings to all!
