Message for Palm Sunday:
Not All Men will taste Death

According to the Bible, Enoch
(great grandfather of Noah)
and the Old Testament prophet
Elijah never died. Genesis 5:24
tells us that “Enoch walked
with God; then he was no more,
because God took him away.”
While Elijah and his succes¬
sor, Elisha, were walking to
Jericho, “suddenly a chariot of
fire and horses of fire appeared
and separated the two of them,
and Elijah went up to heaven in
a whirlwind.” (II Kings 2:11).
Centuries after Elijah’s assump¬
tion into heaven, he appeared
with Jesus and Moses at the
Transfiguration (Luke 9: 28-36).
A dazzling brilliance emanated
from Elijah and Moses, indicat
mg their physical bodies had
been replaced by transcendental
heavenly bodies.
When Christ returns,
Christian believers who are
still alive will never taste death,
Their bodies will be translated

♦ APRIL 1,
just like Enoch’s and Elijah's,
Paul reveals this body-trans
formation will occur in a split
second: “Behold, I show you a
mystery; we shall not all sleep,
but we shall all be changed. In
a moment, in the twinkling of
an eye, at the last trump: for the
trumpet shall sound, and the
dead shall be raised incorrupt
ible, and we shall be changed,
For this corruptible must put on
incorruption, and this mortal

Following their transforma
tion, believers will ascend from
the earth: “For the Lord himself
will come down from heaven,
with a loud command, with the
voice of the archangel and with
the trumpet call of God, and the
dead in Christ will rise first,
After that, we who are still alive
and are left will be caught up
together with them in the clouds
to meet the Lord in the air. And
so we will be with the Lord
forever.” (I Thess. 4:16-17}.
Since the scripture states that
“flesh and blood cannot inherit
the kingdom of heaven,” what
type of bodies will believers
have? Paul answers this ques
tion in I Corinthians 15: 35-44:
“How are the dead raised? With
what kind of body will they
come? O foolish man! What
you sow does not come to life
unless it dies. When you sow,
you do not plant the body that

will be, but just a seed. But
God gives it a body as he has
determined, and to each kind of
seed he gives its own body. All
flesh is not the same: Men have
one kind of flesh; animals have
another, birds another and fish
another. There are also heavenly
bodies and there are earthly
bodies; but the splendor of the
heavenly bodies is one kind,
and the splendor of the earthly
bodies is another. The sun has
one kind of splendor, the moon
another and the stars another;
and star differs from star in
splendor. So will it be with the
resurrection of the dead. The
body that is sown is perishable,
it is raised imperishable; it is
sown in dishonor, it is raised in
glory; it is sown in weakness, it
is raised in power; it is sown a
natural body, it is raised a spiri
tual body.”
Following their transfor
mation, Christ will usher His
believers into heaven. What
will heaven be like? “No eye
has seen, no ear has heard, no
mind has conceived what God
has prepared for those who love
him.” (I Corinthians 2: 9).

QUESTION: If beauty is
the most important attri¬
bute in determining personal
worth in this culture, what is
in second place?
DR. DOBSON: It is intelli¬
gence as expressed in scholastic
aptitude. When the birth of a
firstborn child is imminent, his
parents pray that he will be
normal... that is, “average.” But
from that moment on, average
will not be good enough. Their
child must excel. He. must
succeed. He must triumph. He
must be the first of his age to
walk or talk or ride a tricycle.
He must earn a stunning report
card and amaze his teachers
with his wit and wisdom. He
must do well in Little League,
and later he must be a track star
or first-chair trombone or. the
valedictorian. His sister must
be a cheerleader or the senior
class president or the soloist or
the best pupil in her advanced
placement class.
Throughout the formative
years of childhood, parents give
their kids the same message day
after day: “We’re counting on
you to do something fantastic.
Now don’t disappoint us!” The
hopes, dreams and ambitions of
an entire family sometimes rest
on the shoulders of an immature
child. And in this atmospHere
of fierce competition, the parent

who produces an intellectually
gifted child is clearly holding
the winning sweepstakes ticket.
Unfortunately, exceptional
children are just that - excep¬
tions. Seldom does a five-year
old memorize the King James
Version of the Bible or play
chess blindfolded or compose
symphonies in the Mozart
manner. To the contrary, the
vast majority of our children
are not dazzlingly brilliant,
extremely witty, highly coordi¬
nated, tremendously talented or
universally popular! They are
just plain kids with oversized
needs to be loved and accepted
as they are. Thus, the stage
is set for unrealistic pressure
on the younger generation and
considerable disappointment for
their parents.
QUESTION: Isn’t it our goal
to produce children with self
discipline and self-reliance?
If so, how does your approach
to external discipline imposed
by parents get translated into
internal control?
DR. DOBSON: There are
many authorities who suggest
that parents take a passive
approach to their children for
the reason implied by your
question: They want their kids
to discipline themselves. But
since young people lack the
maturity to generate that self
control, they stumble through
childhood without experiencing
either internal or external dis¬
cipline. Thus, they enter adult
life having never completed
an unpleasant assignment or
accepted an order that they dis¬
liked or yielded to the leader¬
ship of their elders. Can we
expect such a person to exercise
THE LEADER TRIBUNE
self-discipline in young adult¬
hood? I think not. That indi¬
vidual doesn’t even know the
meaning of the word.
My belief is that
parents should introduce their
children to discipline and self
control by any reasonable means
available, including the use of
external influences, when they
are young. By being required
to behave responsibly, he gains
valuable experience in con¬
trolling his own impulses and
resources. Then as he grows
into the teen years, responsibil¬
ity is transferred year by year
from the shoulders of the parent
directly to the child. He is no
longer required to do what he
has learned during earlier years
in hopes that he will want to
function on his own initiative.
To illustrate, a child should
be required to keep his room
relatively neat when he is
young. Then somewhere during
the midteens, his own self-dis¬
cipline should take over and
provide the motivation to con¬
tinue the task. If it does not,
the parent should close the door
and let him live in a dump, if
that is his choice.
In short, self-discipline does
not come automatically to those
who have never experienced it.
Self-control must be learned,
and it must be taught.
