TWO REALLY FUN FALL
ACTIVITIES, AND WE ARE
ENCOURAGING EVERYONE
TO JOIN IN.
Fall decorating contest-The
theme is Happy Fall, Y'all.
Everyone is encouraged to dec¬
orate your home or business
for fall by Oct. 15 deadline.
Judging will begin on Oct. 16.
We have an experienced judge
from out of town coming to
find first, second, and third
place winners in business and in
family categories.
Scarecrow contest, free hot
dogs & s'mores, and music in
Everett Park Oct. 15, 4:00 p.m.
until 6 p.m.
We are looking for teams
of businesses, families, clubs,
churches, civic groups, com¬
munity workers, etc. to build a
scarecrow in the park from 4:00
to 4:30 p.m. Neighbors who
are not building a scarecrow
will be glad to help teams as
they assemble their scarecrows.
Plan your scarecrow and get
your stuff ahead of time, but
You Must Assemble It In The
Park In 30 Minutes! Please
call Jo Ann Dankel by Oct. 7
to register your team. This will
help us judge how much food to
prepare.
ESNA will provide free hay
to add finishing touches, but you
should plan to stuff your scare¬
crow with old plastic grocery
bags, packing peanuts, or some¬
thing like that. We found out
that a hay-stuffed scarecrow is
far too heavy to manage and
stinks after it is wet! You can
mount your scarecrow any way
you like—on a garden stake, a
wheelbarrow, a bicycle, whatev¬
er—use your creativity!
When the party is over, you
may take your scarecrow and
add it to your fall display.
We will have TV and print
media there, so wear your favor¬
ite fall colors

Andrew Day & Jannah Brown, Assessing drains for
planning of a storm drain tagging & clean up.
By Andrew Day
Did you know that the very
same water that picks up pol¬
lutants all over town, goes into
our storm drains and travels
directly into our waterways?
Some examples of these pollut¬
ants could be oil on roadways,
paints, plastics, fertilizers or
even debris. After these pollut¬
ants are carried into our water¬
ways, they not only endanger
the wildlife, but it also pol¬
lutes the water that people may
drink. You might be wonder¬
ing how this affects you. but
we depend on the wildlife that
rely on those water sources,
and we also depend on the
water for our own use. Would
you be comfortable with eating
fish or deer that have been
contaminated with chemicals
that were washed down storm
drains? Well I would like to
tell you what you can do to
prevent storm drain pollution
in our area.
You may not know it, but
there is something that you
can do to help prevent this
problem. Storm drain tagging
can make a huge impact on
storm water pollution in our
waterways. The whole concept
of storm drain tagging is to pul
out reminders for the public, as
well as, by distributing educa¬
tional pamphlets during a coor¬
dinated tagging project. What
difference would this make?

Well, these reminders and edu¬
cational pamphlets share how*
the average citizen can keep
pollutants away from storm
drains. You can do something
to make a difference with the
growing problem of Storm
Water pollution. First you can
help by disposing of yard debris
and chemicals properly, and by
keeping any pollutants away
from the storm drains, or any¬
where else that they might get
into our waterways. Disposing
of these items in the proper
way is the best solution to this
problem. You can also help by
using pesticides and herbicides
sparingly and by reading the
label and following the direc¬
tions correctly. Cleaning your
vehicle on the lawn, or at an
appropriate washing facility,
and cleaning up after your pet
are other ways to help w ith this
kind of contamination.
You wouldn’t want to
drink water with garbage or oil
floating in it, and so 1 am sure
you wouldn’t want our fish or
wildlife living in. or near, the
same kind of polluted water.
Make steps to dispose of your
garbage and chemicals proper¬
ly. All of these things combined
are great ways to start helping
to keep our environment clean
and healthy. So please do your
part. Our wildlife, our water¬
ways and our drinking water
are dependent on it!_
