Scripture of the \\Peek
Psalm 91:1 (NIV). He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in
the shadow of the Almighty Thoughts on This Verse ... At the end of the
day of summer’s scorching heat, where did you find your shadow of protection
and refreshment? When we place our lives in the care of God Most High, we
find that his shadow of protection and refreshment covers us. Even in times of
difficulty, we know that he has protected us from the worst of Satan’s wither¬
ing attack and that his presence offers us strength that we may not often see
but always can trust.
The Prisoner Is You
11;
The hardest thing to do is
to forgive someone who has
wronged or mistreated you.
Peter once asked Jesus how
many times he should forgive
his brother. Before Jesus could
respond, Peter answered his
own question; “Should it be
seven times?” A rabbinic
teaching of that day, based on
passages from Amos, stipu¬
lated that forgiveness should
be extended three times. Peter
was quite liberal. Not only
did he double the biblical tol¬
erance of three times, but he
added one for good measure.
Peter expected to be praised by
Jesus, but the Master shocked
everyone in ear shot when He
said, “You should forgive not
seven times, but seventy times
seven.”

FAITH & FAMILY
Opinion s expressed by writers on this page are their own and not necessarily those of The l eader Tribune
Emphasizing forgiveness,
Jesus related this parable; A
servant owed his master a huge
debt—the modern day equivalent
of several million dollars. When
the servant did not pay his debt,
the master ordered him and his
family to be sold. The servant
fell on his knees and began
begging. “Have pity on me, and
I will pay you back." Moved
with compassion, the master not
only let the man go. but forgave
him the debt. Immediately after
being forgiven, the man encoun¬
tered a fellow servant who owed
him a small debt-thc trifling
amount of several dollars. He
seized the man by the throat,
started choking him. and
ordered him to pay. Although
the man pleaded for leniency,
the forgiven servant had him
thrown into prison. When the
other servants witnessed this
compassionless act. they went
to the master and related the
incident. Summarily, the master
summoned the man he had for¬
given and said, “You wicked
servant! I forgave your debt, but
you failed to have pity on your
fellow servant, so I am turning
you over to be tortured until you
pay your debt in full. Then Jesus
warned, “This is what my Father
in heaven will do to you, if you
do not forgive your brother from
your heart.”
Jesus makes the indisput¬
able point that we must forgive
others if we expect to receive
God’s forgiveness. Just as there
was a vast difference between
the two debts in Jesus' parable,
the debt that others owe us pales
in comparison to the debt we
owe God. In fact, we have been
forgiven a debt that is beyond
paying. It was our sins that
sent God’s son to the cross.
Colossians 3; 13 compels us to
"Forgive as the Lord forgave
you.” In the Lord’s Prayer, we
petition God to “Forgive us our
trespasses as we forgive those
who trespass against us.”
One who harbors grudges
and resentment not only suffers
physically, emotionally, and
spiritually, but becomes a pris¬
oner of the hatred he allows to
fester. Corrie Ten Boom said,
“Forgiveness is setting a pris¬
oner free and realizing that the
prisoner is you.” Are you schem¬
ing and plotting to get even with
someone who has wronged you?
lesTand hatred consume youTt
win surely destroy you. instead.
turn the problem over to God
and let Him handle it.
