Pictured are Cornelia “Pete” Brown Nichols and
husband Bill of Fort Valley. Mrs. Nichols was recognized
recently for the role of her grandmother, Cornelia
Brown of Fort Valley, who in 1913, was responsible
for having Joanna Troutman honored and enshrined
in Texas. Joanna Troutman, called the “Betsy Ross of
Texas, ” is one of Crawford County’s most famous icons.
She designed and crafted the “Lone Star flag" that
was adopted as the Texas state flag. Upset about the
neglected Pope Cemetery in Crawford County, Mrs.
John Troutman of Fort Valley (Joanna’s sister-in-law),
requested Mrs. Brown’s help. Mrs. Brown interceded
with the governor of Texas to have Joanna Troutman’s
remains transported to the state cemetery at Austin,
Texas, where a bronze statue was erected in her
honor. Further, a painting of Joanna was hung at the
state capitol. Joanna, at age 17, presented the flag at
Knoxville, Georgia, in November 1835, to a company of
150 Georgia volunteers marching westward to assist
Texas in its war of independence against Mexico. When
Joanna’s body was exhumed in 1913, the remains of
her husband, Solomon Pope, and their two sons were
transferred to Oaklawn Cemetery in Fort Valley.
