ORl ANDO RODRIGUEZ
I Vi tdumnht
In the late 1960's while
traveling in the Dominican
Republic I decided to go see
an old friend of mine from
Cuba who lived there. When
I arrived at his house I met his
cousin, a red haired man who
with his twin brother had been
a jet fighter pilot in the Cuhan
military before the revolution in
1959, after which they had both
defected to the USA. During
our conversation he told us
stories about his experiences
during a secret war 1 had never
heard of in the African country
of Belgian Congo.
The war had been fought
between U.S. trained Cuban
exiles and Communist Cuban
troops sent by Castro with
backing from Russia. In 1961
the CIA had invaded Cuba at
the Bay of Pigs using the exiles,
but the operation failed because
President Kennedy ordered the
U.S. aircraft carrier sent there
to support the invasion not to
launch its aircraft. Because of
that decision thousands of exile
soldiers the CIA had trained for
the mission either died or were
taken as prisoners.
After the battle Castro gave a
speech on radio and television in
which he boasted about how he
had easily defeated the American

THE LEADER TRIBUNE
"Yankee" invaders. Following
that incident he built up his
army with military equipment
and training provided by the
Russians At that time several
countries in Africa were targeted
for the spread of Communism, so
with support from the Russians
and the Chinese thousands of
Castro’s soldiers led by Che
Guevarra were sent there to start
revolutions.
To oppose the Communists the
CIA assembled another secret
Cuban exile force including
about 100 pilots which they
called the "Makasi Unit" and sent
them to Belgian Congo where
they defeated the leftist Simba
warriors and Castro's troops.
The twin brother pilots fought
in the Makasi Unit for over three
years in Africa and two of their
fellow pilots who were shot down
were actually captured and eaten
by cannibals. The exiles won the
war quietly, but never received
any credit for their efforts.
The pilot also told us that
in addition to their regular pay
he and the other fighter pilots
were paid bonuses for destroying
Russian made military transport
trucks carrying soldiers.
Cameras were mounted in the
front of their jets so after each
of the hundreds of missions they
flew the CIA could confirm
how many enemy targets they
had destroyed and pay them the
bonuses according to how many
troops they had eliminated in
their attacks.
Years later during another
secret war in Angola President
Reagan sent U.S. troops to the
island of Granada and stopped
construction of an airport being
built there by Castro's army. The
Communists were planning to
use that airfield as a refueling
base for aircraft transporting
their troops to and from Africa.
Thankfully our intervention
ended those plans before the
support base could be completed.
Very few details about the
secret wars waged by the CIA
using Cuban exile forces were
known until recently, when
some of the information was
declassified and released to the
public. Those missions were so
secret that even family members
of the soldiers and pilots involved
in the wars weren’t aware of
what their patriotic relatives
were doing during their time of
service. I felt privileged to have
been told those amazing stories
by the heroic fighter pilot. A
book is now being written about
that war.
The majority of people here
in the USA have no idea of the
secret activities our government
has been involved with in places
all over the world to keep our
country a safe, free place to live.
If those operations had ever been
made public the Liberals would
have prevented the CIA and the
special forces they use from
doing what had to be done to
stop the Communists. 1 am sure
that even now similar missions
are being carried out in faraway
places by more unsung heroes.
Although Russia is no longer
a serious threat to us. there
are ongoing efforts in several
Central and South American
countries to spread Communism.
1 hope the classified area at Fort
Benning where the Makasi Unit
was trained is being used now
to prepare for similar conflicts
coming in the future.
