is somewhat akin to the "seven
year itch”! There is no debate—
the continual verbiage surround¬
ing the escapades of our Chief
Executive is absolutely
insane! There is simply no
need to know what He (or the
wife) piddles with daily! The
important issues can (or should
) be handled by the Legislative
bodies! (And my slant has noth¬
ing to do with patriotism or
loyalty!)
in the finale, moderation is
not a term we care to be saddled
with!
And we certainly don;t
want anyone telling us what
we should, and should not be
attached to! We will do “our
thing”—all without the aid of
professionals-many who
have learned by “trial and error”;
and a host who have learned the
hard way!! We will drive as we
wish, go anywhere we desire,
anytime of the day or night, with
anyone we care to
accompany—eat what we
want—wear what “floats our
boat"—exhaust all pleasurcs
-shop till we drop! And life goes
on-for a while! The end comes,
and we cry the blues-knowing
where we have been, and what
we have done! Give it some
thought!

Home Grown Pecans
With all of the recent news
about pecan prices it seems
that everyone wants to get into
producing these tasty treats, or
taking a little better care of the
trees that are already in their
yards. Pecans are grown all
across the state and not only
provide tasty, healthy nuts but
can also enhance the environ¬
ment and possibly add some
income from your landscape.
Probably the largest limiting
factor to home pecan production
is the inability to spray trees to
protect the foliage and the nuts
against fungi and insects. The
second biggest factor is prob¬
ably crop destruction by crows
and squirrels. We don’t have
any cultivars with resistance to
crows and/or squirrels, but we
do have some that are resistant
to disease.
The major fungal disease
that affects trees almost every
year is pecan scab. It starts on
the leaves and eventually moves
to the shuck. There are several
pecan cultivars to choose from,
however only a few have good
resistance to this destructive
disease and produce a quality
nut (kernel). These varieties

are Elliot, Excel, Gloria Grande
and Sumner. You may not be
familiar with these names, but
most reputable nurseries will be
able to get these cultivars.
If you live in an area without
nearby pecan trees you should
always plant at least two vari¬
eties to aid in pollination.
Optimum tree spacing for the
home tree is 60 - 80 feet being
sure to avoid planting too close
to structures and under power
lines. Irrigation will not only
be necessary for the establish¬
ment period but is all essential
to increase annual production.
Pecans are naturally alter¬
nate bearing. This means they
set a crop one year then have
a much reduced crop the fol¬
lowing year. Proper irrigation
and fertilization can help lessen
the degree to which trees act
in this manner. Prior to plant¬
ing you should always take a
soil sample of the area. This
will help determine not only
fertilization requirements, but
also will tell you how much
lime you need to raise the pH
to around 6.5.

I said. “C'mere. Lemme stick you

“I can't see you sternum,” he
yelled at me. When Hawgin’ gets

SOAP MAKING CLASSES
Mossy Creek Soaps is offer¬
ing classes on making cold
processed soaps with natural
ingredients. They had some
of their awesome soaps at the
Market this year. Classes are
Jan 28 and Mar 3 from 10am
Ipm. For more info go to
www.mossycreeksoap.com
or 973-3190
weekly for the first few years.
They lose a large portion of
their roots when dug so this
period is critical to develop
a new vigorous root system.
Fertilizer should not be placed
in the planting hole and should
not be applied until early
summer. Even then you should
only use around one pound of
5-IO-I5 in a 25 sq. ft. area
around each tree. The second
year you can apply fertilizer
twice, with one spring and one
follow up summer application.
Pecans require more zinc
than many other trees or plants
so it is Important to use a fer¬
tilizer with zinc or apply one
pound of zinc sulfate per tree
for the first three years. If you
see a “pecan special” fertil¬
izer it usually means that it has
elevated levels of zinc.
These are just some basic
practices to starting your home
grown pecans. If you need
more specific pest control rec¬
ommendations or need info on
caring for larger trees please
feel free to contact the Peach
County Extension Office at
478-825-6466 or backyard#
