Where Churches Are

In recent years, I maintained
a friendship with five shut-ins,
two in their upper 80s and three
in their 90s, with whom I kept
in close contact, calling them
on the phone, visiting them,
running errands for them, car¬
rying them to ride, and bring¬
ing them food. Now, all these
individuals have gone home to
be with the Lord. All of them
had one thing in common; they
had been active in their church¬
es, but after they became too
infirm to attend services, their
churches forgot about them. Not
once did the pastor, a member of
the church, a deacon or steward
or vestryman pay them a visit
or call them on the phone
They were basically forgotten.
I talked to a man recently who
has been a bed ridden for quite
some time, yet no one from
his church had paid him a visit

The early Christian church
set the example for all church¬
es to follow. They elected a
group of seven deacons, of
which Stephen was a member,
which were tasked to distribute
food, clothing, and other essen¬
tials to widows, the poor, and
the sick. First century church
members harbored an intense
sense of responsibility for one
another and shared their belong¬
ings with those in need. To
establish a funding source, the
scripture states that property
owners sold their houses and
land and brought the proceeds
to the apostles for distribution.
Ananias and his wife Sapphira
were ignominious examples of
those who perverted the rules.
After selling a piece of property,
the couple gave a portion of the
selling price to the apostles,
but surreptitiously kept back the
rest. Peter, being aware of their
deception, confronted Ananias,
saying “Ananias, why has Satan
filled your heart so that you
have deceived the Holy Spirit
and kept back part of the price
of your property? Not only have
you lied to men, you have lied

Paul’s condemnatory words,
he fell dead, Three hours
later, Sapphira came in. Peter
inquired of her how much the
property sold for. She, too, lied.
“Why do you tempt the spirit
of the Lord?” scolded Peter.
Sapphira immediately collapsed
and breathed her last.
Churches who profess to be
Christian are only kidding them¬
selves if they neglect members
who are shut-ins, sick, or needy.
One church has a group of men
who perform odd jobs for the
elderly such as replacing batter¬
ies in smoke detectors, changing
light bulbs, winterizing pipes
for winter, cleaning out gutters,
etc. That’s a start, but no single
group can do the entire job.
In the absence of any orga¬
nized church program, each
member should identify at least
one person who is sick, elderly,
or needy and minister to that
person in ways the Lord places
on his/her heart. My good friend,
the late Horace Woodruff of
Perry routinely visited scores
of people every week including
shut-ins and those in nursing
homes and hospitals. This saint
of the Lord was a trail blazer for
all of us to seek to emulate.

Are The Ten Commandments
Binding Today?
One of the greatest hindranc¬
es to understanding the simple
gospel of Jesus Christ is the lack
of understanding the purpose of
the Law of Moses. Perhaps
the most important study stu¬
dents of the Bible can engage
in is learning to know to whom
God is speaking. (Hebrews
1:1-2) 2 Timothy 2;15 also tells
us to. "Study to shew thyself
approved unto God, a workman
that needeth not to be ashamed,
rightly dividing the word of
truth.” “Rightly dividing
helps us understand that God
has spoken in different ways
to mankind throughout man’s
existence but has “in these last
days (the Christian age) spoken
unto us by his Son.”
The Ten Commandments are
revealed in the Old Testament
in Exodus 20:2-17. It is notable
that the Ten Commandments
are probably the best known
and most often quoted law in
the world. Yet the application
of this law to man today is the
least understood.
When Moses gave the Ten
Commands to the people the
second time, he emphasized that
the laws were not made with
Fort Valley. A.W. had been a
resident of Fort Valley for 62
years before moving to W'arner
Robins, then to Macon. He had
been in the insurance busi
ness for more than 40 years
and had been associated with
The Leader Tribune as a sports
writer for over 35 years. There
he was able to carry on his
devotion for Peach County
Trojan athletics, rarely miss
ing a football or basketball
game. He also worked at Rooks
Funeral Home. He loved his
country and his church, serving
over six years in the US Army
and Army Reserves, acheiv
ing the rank of Staff Sergeant.
A member of the Fort Valley
Nazarene Church for more
than 20 years, he became a
charter member of the Fort
Valley Evangelical Church,
now known as GracePointe
Church. An avid barbeque
retired for many years due to
health issues. Survivors include
a daughter, Patricia Shattuck
and husband Will of Cleveland;
brother, Benny Day and wife

their fathers or with “...anyone
else, but with us, with all those
of us alive here today.” (Dent.
5:3) Notice, in verse one the
covenant was made with Israel.
A covenant is an agreement
between parties and affects no
others. Paul told in his writ¬
ings in the New Testament the
reason for the law. “...the law
was our schoolmaster to bring
us unto Christ, that we might be
justified by faith. But after that
faith is come, we are no longer
under a schoolmaster.” ( Gal.
3:24-25)
Few understand that the Ten
Commandments were a tempo¬
rary law (schoolmaster) that was
to be done away with. While
the Ten Commandment Law
was in effect, Jeremiah proph¬
esied that God would make a
“new and different” covenant in
the future. (Jeremiah 31:31-34)
The writer of Hebrews refer¬
enced the Jeremiah 31 prophesy
in Hebrews 8:7-13. Please read
the verses from both scriptures
and compare them.

not that I am come to destroy

to fulfill." (Matt. 5:17) Paul
affirmed in Col. 2:14 that Christ
did fulfill the law. "Blotting out
the handwriting of ordinances
that was against us. which was
contrary to us, and took it out
of the way, nailing it to his
cross." The cross of Jesus
Christ, his death, burial and
resurrection, mark the end of
the Ten Commandments as a
binding law on God’s people.
Jesus’ resurrection from the
dead ushered in the beginning
of a new covenant between God
and His people.
The Law of Moses and the
Ten Commandments was given
ONLY to the Jews. Today, the
New Covenant or Gospel is for
all people. Many people fail to
understand that today we must
keep certain commands of God,
not because they are a part of
the Ten Commandments, but
because they are included in
the new covenant of the New
Testament.
