Saturday night’s basketball games at
Peach County High School will continue a
rivalry that’s about as old as Peach County
itself, maybe older.
For decades. Fort Valley and neighbor¬
ing Perry, in Houston County, carried on
a fierce rivalry on the streets as well the
basketball courts. Boys from either town
who hit on girls from the other ran the risk
of getting hit themselves. Billy Powell's
book “Pride of the Panthers“ recalls one

The Trojans lead through
most of the game, but couldn’t
break the game open, as the
Hurricanes kept it close, aided
by accurate free-throw shoot¬
ing. The win wasn’t in the bag
until the final buzzer. Two free
throws by Diondre Brown with
less than a minute to go gave the
Trojans just enough to pull off a
58-56 win.
Forward Durrell Cullens
lead the Trojans with 24 points,
followed by Chet Boyer with
nine, Kentel Kendrick with
eight, Diondre Brown with six,
Demareus Robinson with five,

A Note on Our
Basketball Coverage
Readers have no doubt noticed a lack of consistent coverage of
basketball so far. We apologize for these shortcomings. With our
late Sports Correspondent A.W. Dorsey out of commission. I have
been struggling to cover sports in addition to full-time coverage of
news. The overlap between football and basketball seasons made
it difficult to cover bttth sports, and since then. I’ve had to climb
the learning curve.
We have some pictures and coverage this week and have begun
working with coaches to get on track. Coverage should gain in
breadth and depth over the next few issues. Due to the frequency
of basketball games, not every game will get in-depth coverage
or photos, but we will try to have some information about every
game. We will also work to get information about Junior Varsitv
and middle school hoops.
We appreciate your patience as we work to fill A.W.’s shoes,
which, as we’re learning, were a lot bigger than we realized VK
