Well, Valentine’s Day has
come and gone and hopefully
you are not in the doghouse.
If you did forget the chocolate,
flowers and jewelry, maybe you
can make it up to that special
someone by staying out of the
house and out of their way. Give
them some time to cool off
by getting out in the garden
and getting your potato patch
planted.
Seriously, this is the time of
year when most of our potatoes
get planted in home gardens,
Potatoes will germinate at soil
temperatures of 45 F. but 50 F
is preferred. If you follow our
recommendations you would
actually wait until about the
10th of March in this part of
the state.
It is best if seed pieces have
1-2 eyes. More than that starts
to affect yields, and less can
result in a failed stand. Seed
pieces should be planted 4-5
inches deep and 10" between
plants. Although you don't have
to if you have your soil well
tilled, most folks will bed their
potatoes. This gives the tubers
room to develop and increases
efficiency when harvesting.
If you plant potatoes year after
year it is important to rotate
with crops such as beans (peas),
squash or com. Potatoes are in
the same family as tomatoes,
peppers and eggplants which
means they get a lot of the same
disease and insect problems.
Potatoes do not require a
lot of water early but once the
foliage is fully expanded (mid
May -July) they require a good
bit. Our light soils will require
more frequent irrigation than
heavier soils to our north and
south. Once the bottom leaves
begin yellowing it is good to
reduce irrigation or cut it out all
together. This will reduce late

The Fort Valley Fire Department will be testing fire hydrants throughout the City of
Fort Valley during the month of February. Hydrant testing is required by various regu¬
latory agencies including EPD and ISO. During this time the water in your home may
appear cloudy, rust colored, or may contain sediment. This is normal and is nothing to
be alarmed about. To remove the discoloration or sediment simply run your water until
it is no longer visible. Remember to flush your clothes washing machine water lines as
wen. This will allow you to avoid having to wash clothes twice. If you have any questions

Potatoes prefer a pH that is
lower than most of our garden
plants, about 5.5 for optimum
growth. For fertility you can
follow this recipe. Broadcast a
5-10-15 fertilizer to get at least
Vi of your total fertilizer for
the season, and work this into
the top 6-8" of soil. Too much
nitrogen will only promote top

delay tuber production. Follow

State University. I will be in Washington, D.C. later this
month advocating for Fort Valley State University.
My candidacy revolves around three main issues, which
are jobs, education, and infrastructure. We need to find
a way for the public and private sectors to join together
to solve our economic troubles. I feel that my time as a
county commissioner has provided me the policy back¬
ground needed to help find a solution and to bring jobs
to our district. HD139 is a vital part of our great state’s
agricultural sector. As your next State Representative, I
will fiercely defend our district’s needs when it comes to
agriculture. I will do ray job to ensure that cotton, peach¬
es, peanuts, cattle, poultry, and the many other agricul¬
tural areas are protected, as they’re the lifeblood of our
economy. As a county commissioner, I have worked with
numerous individuals on issues related to infrastructure
and transportation. I’ve helped to bring over $1 million
in funding to my county commission district specifically
for transportation and infrastructure related issues.
I believe we should never underestimate the importance
of our youth for they are the next generation of leaders.
I often use my own resources to provide opportunities
to young people because; I realize that what we give to
them helps shape our future. 1 assist students with col¬
lege preparation by providing students with SAT/ACT
registration and financial aid assistance. For the past
eight years. 1 have taken two students to work as a PAGE
at the State Capitol for Rep. James and Senator Hooks.
I look forward to visiting Fort Valley frequently over
the following months. Please visit my website at pat
tyjamesbentleyfor staterep.com and watch my Economic
Plan video far HD 139 on Youtube. Type in Patty’s Plan.
I am readily available to speak to any groups or to par¬
ticipate in a debate at any time.
