The Pope Cuba

During the early days of the
guerilla war against Democracy
in Cuba, when the rebels led by
Castro came out of the moun¬
tains they were accompanied by
a Catholic priest. Each fighter
had a cross hanging from his
neck to give the impression that
they were Christians in order to
gain more support for their rev¬
olution from the general public.
Then in 1953 they attacked a
hospital at an army base called
Moncada where they killed 19
soldiers and wounded 27 more
in their hospital beds.
After that incident Fidel
Castro was captured and sen¬
tenced to 15 years in prison
for his crimes, but the Catholic
church used its influence to
get him pardoned. As soon
as he got out of jail he trav¬
eled to Mexico and put together
another guerilla army. Within a
short time he returned to Cuba
with his new rebel force and
re-started his revolution. Both
Castro brothers had been edu¬
cated at a private Jesuit school
in Havana, so they were able
to make the public believe they
were devout Catholics.
Then in 1959 as soon as they
had full control of the coun¬
try they declared themselves
to be Marxist - Leninists and
from that point on religion was
banned on the island. They
seized all of the Christian

schools and Universities,
expelled all the members of the
clergy including the nuns and
changed the educational system
so the children would be trained
as Communists from an early
age. The image they had pro¬
jected as "Christian Liberators”
was just a deception.
In 1998 the Catholic church
convinced Castro to allow Pope
John Paul II to visit the island
so that he might bring hope
to the lives of those suffering
from the extreme poverty there.
Fidel Castro received the Pope
with open arms and was seated
on the front row as the Pope
said “The World Should Open
to Cuba and Cuba Should Open
to The World”. But the Pope
never mentioned all the crimes
and injustices committed over
the previous four decades or
those still being persecuted as
he spoke.
Nothing has changed in Cuba
over the past 14 years since
Pope John Paul visited except
for a few Catholic priests being
allowed to return to the coun¬
try. Now this March the cur¬
rent Pope, Benedict XVI is
going there. The Castro broth¬
ers have been in power for 53
years and will soon be shak¬
ing their bloody hands again
with another Catholic leader.
The Archdiocese of Miami is
now chartering flights to Cuba
at several thousand dollars per
person for a "pilgrimage” to see
the Pope.
Castro’s government arrest¬
ed 75 independent journalists
whose only crime was writing
about the lack of human rights
and injustices on the island.
Each journalist was sentenced
to 20 years in prison, but due
to pressure from International
call was give, Louis gave out
a big yell and stood up with a
new record 666 lbs., getting
to attend.

• Forms needed to file a claim
Medical evidence needed to
support a claim
• Proper preparation of a

• Organizing a claim

THE LEADER TRIBUNE
Human Rights groups they
were deported to Spain. The
wives, sisters and friends of
those jailed men formed a group
called "The Ladies in White”
to protest the abuses, walking
together to and from church
every Sunday while carrying
flowers in their hands.
And every Sunday when they
march Communists in civilian
clothes arc sent by the govern¬
ment to harass, insult and beat
the Ladies. Some of the women
are arrested and thrown in jail
for no reason. Several videos
taken secretly during the attacks
have gotten out and show the
terrible things these women are
having to endure. Yet even with
the evidence shown by those
videos Cuba’s Cardinal Ortega
continues to refuse their appeals
for him to meet with them or
intervene in any way.
Along the road where the
Pope will be traveling during
his visit several of the houses
in which poor people live arc
being demolished because the
government doesn't want them
to be shown on any of the
television broadcasts. Those
families will now be left with¬
out any home at all, but the
government built a brand new
fully equipped modem home
for the Pope to stay in the one
night he will be there. Many
of my Catholic friends are very
upset about what is taking place
and their church’s role in it.
I hope during this visit Pope
Benedict will have the courage
to address the real reasons for
the misery of the over 11 mil¬
lion people in Cuba and call
for Castro to give them their
