Middle East Edges Toward Armageddon
I- ♦
By Billy Powell
Jesus said that among the
signs of His coming would be
“wars and rumors of wars.”
If the events of my lifetime
are any indication. His return
may be soon. I have seen our
homeland attacked twice (Pearl
Harbor and World Trade Towers
in New York City) and there
have been six major wars: World
War II, Korean War, Vietnam
War, Persian Gulf War, and
wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The Middle East has become
a tinderhox ready to explode.
Uprisings have erupted in
Egypt. Libya, and Syria, and
Iran's President Ahntadinejad
has vowed to wipe Israel off the
map. To make matters worse,
Iran appears on the verge of
producing a nuclear bomb. If
it succeeds, terrorist groups
aligned with Iran like Hezbollah
and Hamas would be embold¬
ened to attack Israel and the
United States.

Israeli Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu has
declared that Israel will not live
under the shadow of nuclear
annihilation. Military observers
predict Israel will execute a pre¬
emptive strike on Iran's nuclear
plants as early as this spring.
Although the Israelis prefer U.
S. support, they are prepared to
do it alone. President Obama
wants to allow Iran more time,
hoping sanctions and negotia¬
tions work; however, Iran may
be stalling for more time to
develop nuclear weapons.
American soldiers have further
inflamed tensions by urinat¬
ing on dead Afghan soldiers,
burning Islam’s holy book, the
Koran, Jifld the wanton killing
of 16 Afghan villagers.
In 1961,1 was involved in the
Cuban Missile Crisis. The world
literally stood on the brink of a
nuclear holocaust. Working at
Robins AFB, I was handpicked
to report to an underground
bunker at 12 p.m. each night.
Throughout the night, I pro¬
cessed top-secret documents to
develop a briefing. At 8 o'clock
sharp every morning, the com¬
manding general entered the
War Room where I briefed him
on the readiness status of air¬
craft throughout the world. At
the onset of the crisis, President
Kennedy went on TV and told

What Does 1 he Bible Say
About .... Being Wise or Foolish
Jesus presents a picture of
two classes of hearers as He
gives warning to the hearers.
Please read Matthew 7:24-27 for
the instructions he gave. The
picture is of two men selecting a
foundation upon which to build
a house, but it contrasts one
who carefully chooses and pre¬
pares his foundation with one
who builds carelessly without
preparation. The teaching of
our Lord in this story empha¬
sizes the absolute necessity of
following the instructions given.
The wise man built his house
(or life) upon the “solid foun¬
dation” of obedience to God's
word. Contrasted with that,
the foolish man built his house
(or life) upon the “sand", that
is, after hearing God’s word,
he did nothing with it - he did
not obey!
Notice in Luke 6:47-48 how
strong Luke says, “Whosoever
cometh to me, and heareth my
sayings, and doeth them. I will
shew you to whom he is like:
He is like a man which built an
house, and digged deep, and laid
the foundation on a rock: and
when the flood arose, he stream
bat vehemently upon that house,
and could not shake it: for it was
founded upon a rock.” Luke
did not stop with "hearing" but
likens the man that both “hears
and does (follows) the sayings”
of Christ to the man that built
his house on the rock foun¬
dation. Frequently the term
“rock" is used in the scriptures
to indicate strength, safety, sta¬
bility and durability as in Psalm
18:2, “The Lord is my rock, and
other country in the western
hemisphere will be construed
as an act of direct aggression
against the United States and
retaliated against accordingly.”
People went out the next day
and cleaned out the grocery
stores. No canned goods were
left on the shelves. Those were
scary times.
The day President Kennedy
was shot in 1963,1 watched the
SAC Wing at Robins respond to
a possible threat to our national
security. Within minutes after
the shooting. I saw the first B-52
strato-fortress take off, smoke
streaming from its engines, and
bank northerly toward Macon.
Several minutes later another...
then another. The SAC bomber
wing emptied its runway. 1
counted 24 planes, all carrying
atomic bombs. Trailing behind
came six KC-l35s for in-flight
refueling. These planes were
headed toward Russia, fearing
the Kremlin had orchestrated
the assassination, Enough
destructive power passed before
my eyes to destroy every major
city in the world. As then, we
live in perilous times. The world
appears to be irrepressibly
moving toward the final great
battle spoken of in Revelation
16:16: “The armies gathered
together in a place that in
Hebrew is called Armageddon.”
What America Expects of It's Military Force
l
4
For over 200 years, the Armed
Militia of America has left
family and friends, donned the
“garb and grenades" for combat;
sailed or marched away to the
forest, the fields, the skies, the
jungles, and the seas; confront¬
ed the enemy on impossible
turf—returning home as victor.
Many came back bleeding—
while vast numbers were planted
on alien soil. This odious
description of our Regimented
Force delights the majority of
citizens—and we have come
to believe that they are totally
invincible. We have labelled
them as “machines”; with no
limitations on their conduct or
endurance. Millions now take
for granted that sleep, rest, food
(and more) are mere luxuries
—that our “Rough and Ready"
contingent of front line war-

THE LEADER TRIBUNE
Ia ‘
my fortress, and my deliverer;
my God. my strength, in whom
I will trust...”; Matthew 18:18
after Peter had declared Christ
to be the Son of God, “And 1
say also unto thee. That thou art
Peter, and upon this rock I will
build my church; and the gates
of hell shall not prevail against
it.”; and in l Corinthians 10
Paul reminds us of the Israelites’
history as they journeyed from
Egypt with Moses. “And did all
drink the same spiritual drink:
for they drank of that spiritual
Rock that followed them; and
that Rock was Christ.” (Verse
4). When the foundation of our
faith is the Rock, Christ, then
the doer of God’s word will
survive the trials, hardships and
temptations of life that are sure
to come our way. The one
who hears but does not follow
(obey) the word of God will
suffer irreversible loss because
he does not have the Rock to
sustain him.
This teaching applies today to
both the Christian and the non
Christian. To obtain forgive¬
ness of sins, the sinner must be
a "wise builder” and build his
life based on his obedience to
God’s word. To obey one must
hear AND believe that Jesus
Christ is the only begotten Son
of God (Matt. 10:32) and then
follow through with the rest of
the commands that culminate
with baptism (Mark 16:16) for
the remission of past sin. Isaiah
59:1-2 tells us that, "Behold, the
Lord's hand is not shortened,
that it cannot save; neither his
ear heavy, that it cannot hear:
But your iniquities have separat¬
ed between you and your God,
and your sins have hid his face
from you, that he will not hear.”
The wise man will hear AND
obey God's word and be saved.
While the foolish man will hear
And Do Nothing! Where arc
you in your pathway to God?
“Thou believest that there is
one God; thou doest well: the
devils also believe, and tremble.
But wilt thou know, O vain
man, that faith without works
is dead?...so then faith without
works is dead also." (James
2:19-26) What “works" do we
speak of? The actions required
of the human which allows the
blood of Christ to be applied
to the sinner to wash away past
sin. i.e. Hearing the word of
God; believing that Jesus is
Christ, the Son of God; confess¬
ing (admitting this) before man
(Matt. 10:33); repenting (not just
saying “I'm sorry" but a change
of direction); and then “.. .we are
buried with him by baptism into
death: that like as Christ was
raised up from the dead by the
glory of the Father, even so we
also should walk in newness of
life. ... Now if we be dead with
Christ, we believe that we shall
also live with him." (Romans
6:1-11) Are you a "wise man"
who loves God and wants to
be his friend? (John 14:15 and
15:14).

riors are equipped to persevere
through “mud and mortars”
-never capitulati ng—(physical ly
or psychologically)—regard¬
less of how flammable the
atmosphere becomes. Such a
mind set is the pinnacle of igno¬
rance. They are the best; but
even steel melts when subjected
to enough heat.
In recent days (March 2012),
Sergeant Robert Bales, in his
12th year of Army service, and
his fourth tour of wars in the
Middle East, somehow "stripped
a mental gear’*—and summar¬
ily slaughtered 16 Afghan civil¬
ians. While not yet charged,
he is being held in a stateside
prison, while authorities shuffle
through the disastrous affair.
The entire scenario has played
havoc with International rela¬
tions. No one can dismiss the
incident as a minor mistake; and
this writer does not. It is entirely
possible that this soldier, with a
family of his own, could receive
the death penalty, or perhaps
life in prison.
Having recounted the horrible
scene that has occurred; it would
do readers well to scan the fol¬
lowing words. This does not
happen every week(or month
Thank God.); but only those in
deficit of behavioral patterns
brought on by battle, fatigue,
and psychological dangers,
would list this an “unexpect¬
ed” event. Adequately trained
professionals are very much
aware, that PTSD, and perpet¬
ual deployments, can bring on
a physical and mcntnl explo¬
sion of all values,jpur leaders
have “pushed the envelope”
of human endurance passed
all reasonability. Most Homo
sapiens (or any other species)
are ill equipped to handle the
“chaotic cringe" of contempo¬
rary warfare; and emerge with
“sanity and survival”.
It will be a sad commentary if
Sergeant Bales is "cast away" as
a hardened criminal. The media
listing of his previous margin¬
al conduct (in this instance) is
really tacky and insignificant.
What he needs more than any¬
thing else, is a- “concert consen¬
sus" that, as a nation, we have
demanded far too much—and
ensure for him a lengthy period
of systematic rehabilitation. It
may be too late.
