During our last con¬ versation, Mrs. Lillian said she would love to visit both the old Perry school (now- Houston BOE headquarters) and the new Perry High School where she had so many wonderful memories. During the beginning of spring. I planned to drive her down to Perry, but it never happened. I picked up “The Telegraph" one day and was shocked to learn that Mrs. Lillian had died. Her nephew, Ray Campbell of Byron, said she died suddenly from a massive stroke. To my regret, this is not the first time 1 had a friend die unexpectedly. When it happens. I always fault myself for not visiting sooner. To this day, I blame myself for not taking full advantage of a two-hour visit with my grand¬ daddy, whom I loved very much. When granddaddy became ill with cancer, I drove down to Perry to see him several times a week. 1 vividly recall my last visit. I went into his bedroom to talk. He was bedridden. After about 30 minutes, I told him that I wanted to ride up to the local high school gym “Can We Talk” will be open to ladies 18 years of age and older only. HARRIS CHAPEL CME CHURCH SPRING REVIVAL Harris Chapel CME Church invites the community to its Spring Holy Week Revival beginning nightly at 7:30 p.m. with a series of guest minis¬ ters delivering the messages: Wednesday, April 4, Rev. Sidney L. Kendrick; Thursday, April 5, Rev. Morris Hillsman; Friday, April 6, Rev. Arthur Grace and watch Coach Eric Staples’ basketball team practice. My brother Dwayne was on the team at the lime. So I left with the promise I would return soon. After about an hour and a half. I returned. When I entered the bedroom, I found granddaddy sleeping; he had to take morphine for pain several times daily and had dozed off after taking the medication. 1 decided not to awaken him and returned back home. The next day granddaddy passed away. Oh how 1 hated that I had not stayed with him that precious hour and a half instead of going to the basket¬ ball gym. 1 can truthfully say I spent a lot of time with my granddad, but to this very day I regret that I opted to go to the gym rather than stay with him. What makes it so hard is that was the last opportunity 1 ever had to see my granddaddy alive. Those 90 minutes were pre¬ cious moments that I misused. If you have a loved one or know someone who is ill that you need to see, don’t put it off because tomorrow may be too late. What Does The BibleTeaeh In Mathew 28:19-20 “Go therefore, and make dis¬ ciples of all the nations, baptiz¬ ing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that 1 have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. Amen” Matthew, a disciple and one of the twelve apostles of Christ, quoted the Lord to conclude the book of Matthew. This is “the word” from the Lord Jesus Christ! What was and is the purpose of Matthew recording these words from the Lord? What is the his¬ torical and biblical position on baptism? What is the purpose of baptism and is it a require¬ ment for people living under any covenant other than the New Testament? For example, were either Noah, Abraham, or Moses told to be baptized? The answer is of course, NO! They lived under another law from God. God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last day spoken to us by His Son, whom he has appointed heir of all things, through whom also he made the worlds;" (Hebrews 1:1,2). Today are we required to build an ark like Noah? NO! Genesis 6:22 records "Thus Noah did; according to all that God com¬ manded him, so he did.” What happened to the inhabitants of the world when the floods came? Genesis 7:21-23 records, “And all flesh died that moved on the earth, birds and cattle, and beast, and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, and every man. All in whose nostrils was the breath of the KMHi t Obviously, the word “Home” means different things to people of the world. For the speculator, it is merely an investment, that hopefully will produce a profit. For the slothful and indifferent individual, it is an “ill gotten” gain that houses minimal goods. And for the opportunist, it is aspiration toward higher ground. But for the person of credibility, integrity, and appre¬ ciation, a Home means much more. For those who have paid their dues with years of labor, with sacrifice for freedoms, with insight, patience, love, and plan¬ ning — for a place that can truly be called their own — “Home" is the monument to stability, tranquility, and pride. It con¬ tains more than brick, mortar, pipes, wiring, and glass. It is more than three bed- spirit of life, all that was on the dry land. died....Only Noah and those who were with him in the ark remained alive.” Just as Noah did ALL that God com¬ manded him to be saved , so must we “observe all things that 1 have commanded you”. Today to test our faith does God ask us to sacrifice our sons as he did Abraham when testing his faith? NO! Why not?, because we live under a different time of God's law! We must remember we are responsible to God today under the requirements of the New Testament. After he was risen from the dead, Jesus appeared, spoke and ate with many on this earth before He ascended to His Father in heaven where he now sits at the right hand of God. During these days. Jesus gave some commandments to his dis¬ ciples. In Matthew 28:18-19 he said for the disciples to (I) GO; (2) Make Disciples of all nations through teaching; (3) Baptizing [those who had been taught and made disciples] in the name of the Father, and of the Son. and of the Holy Spirit; (4) Teaching them to Observe All Things Whatsoever I Have Commanded You. The scope of this instruction was world¬ wide, “teach all nations” and for all time, “and lo, 1 am with you always, even to the end of the age.” The “gospel" of Christ is what is to be used to make His disciples”.. .Christ died for our sins according to the scrip¬ tures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:” (J Cor. 15:1-4). The apostles were instructed to proclaim this message to all nations, teaching IHome W I rooms, two baths, and storage . It is much more than a driveway and picket fence. It is more than a mortgage of mega bucks, and a roof which challenges the neighbor. It is more than an address on a popular street; in a city that is high profile. The young man on the ground may view the high flying aircraft and dream of far away places, but the caring citizen who flies, looks down from 30,000 feet and dreams of “Home.” The structure may be located on a thoroughfare, and be spacious, or may be a small, humble dwelling on an unpaved road; but for those who have poured heart and soul (along with required monetary Figures) into the project, and have shared love and respect for their parents, siblings or mates, such a place is viewed from a distance as a haven of shelter, safety, and refuge. They are places that contain both assets and liabilities. The lawn may be picturesque, or sketchy. Design may be in deficit, with walls in need of paint. Lighting is placed according to personal choice, not just by the book. Rooms may be small or large. THE LEADER TRIBUNE (making) disciples and instruct¬ ing them in ALL things they should do and observe to be followers (disciples) of Christ. Those who are disciples are to be baptized AFTER they have been taught and have come to believe that Christ is the Son of God, and repent of their past sins and confess Christ as the Son of God before man. Disciples at this point must “put on Christ” through being baptized (Rom. 6:1-8) And the scriptures state in Acts 2:36-47 that AFTER being taught, believing AND baptized, “And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved." Does it matter what you believe and practice in religion? Of course it does'. Jesus said. “If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s com¬ mandments and abide in His love.” (John 15:10) Obedience is often treated by man as an offensive requirement, however even Jesus “though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suf¬ fered. And having been per¬ fected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him.” (Hebrews 5:8-9) Are you obeying Jesus? In Luke 6:46 Jesus said, “But why do you call Me Lord, Lord, and not do the things which I say?” All scripture quoted from the New King James Version. The coffee pot is somewhere near, the fire¬ place (or heating implement) fits the occasion and desire, and the aroma of a favorite dish fills the air. That special plant has found footing (indoors or perhaps some whacky place in the yard). The beds may not always be made, but that's all right. This is Home. The couch may be rumpled, but we will manage. This is Home. The occupants do not necessarily view the building and grounds as a showplacc; but to them it is a mansion that contains pride, comfort, and satisfaction. It is a place of rest, relaxation, of comfort. To the many who have spent countless years in the Military, the Ministry, or tasks in far flung areas (as has this writer), the reality of having a place to "stretch all faculties” cannot be compared with any other medium. When life’s high strung labors have been fin¬ ished (for a day or forever), one is prone to agree with the pro¬ lific pen of he who has written, “There’s no place like Home.” Daniel W Gatlyn USN Ret M i n ister/Journalist
