Conks Id large hotels end boarding houses may think they got np meals on a large scale, but when It comes to ■wholesale cookery the little village of Lls3, on the London and Southwestern Railway, discounts them ell. At a barbecue held there not long since, an ox was boiled (not roasted, which at one time was quite common) whole, more as an experiment than anything else. This Is how they did It: A large hole was dug In the ground and lined with brick. Inside this a tank large enough to hold the ox was built. The carcass was then lowered Into this tank, havlpg been first placed In case formed by heavy cross bars to which chains were attached. Pulleys from a scnffoldlng above were used to raise and lower the ox. Many vegeta bles. iueb as carrots, onions, cabbage and potatoes, were boiled with the meat, thus making many gollons of rich, delicious soup. The boiling re quired Beven hours.—Chicago Record. THE DUTY OF MOTHERS. Daughters Should be Carefully Guided In Early Womanhood. What suffering frequently results from n mother's ignorance; or moro frequently from n mother’s neglect to properly Instruct her daughter I Tradition says “woman must suffer," and young women nro so taught. There Is a little truth nnd a great deal of exaggeration In this. If a young woman suffers severely she needs treatment and her mother should sec that she gets it. Many mothers hesitate to take their daughters to a physician for examina tion; but no mother need hesitate to write freely about her daughter or herself to Mrs. Plnkhsm and secure the most efficient advice without charge. Mrs. Plnkham's address la Lynn, Mass. The following letter from Miss Marik F. Joint bon, Centralis, Pa., shows what neglect will do, and tells how Mrs. Pinkhaqi helped her: “My health became so poor that I had to leave school. I was tired all the time, and had dreadful pains In my aide and hack. I was also troubled with Irregularity of menses. I was very weak, and lost so much flesh that my frienda became alarmed. My mother, who is a firm believer In your remedies from experience, thought per haps they might benefit me, and wrote you for advice. I followed the advice you gave, and used Lydia E. Plnkham's Vegetable Compound and Liver Pills as you directed, and am now aa well as I ever was. I have gained flesh and have a good color. I am completely cured of irregularity.” rroflt In Earlr String limns. For an easily grown crop early string beans are almost always profitable. Tho hills slionld be protected whilo the plants are small, nnd there is dan ger that frosts will nip thorn. Common oard boxes placed over tho hills bot tom up can be vory cheaply procured. Thoy will keep off frost as well as more expensive coverings, and can be kept from blowing awny by putting a stone or a little earth over thorn at night. Miinurc* For I'otntoos. It is not safe to manure potato ground heavily for late crop of potatoes. After midsummta it will surely make them rot if there is any wet weather. The early potatoes are off tho lnnd so early that the laud cannot easily be made too rioh for thorn. Yet in some very rainy sonsons oven the early potntoos require to bo dng ns soon as ripe, or even be fore, in order to save them. If com mercial manures are used on potatoes they should not be put lu contact with the soed. Most mineral mauures, eithor acid or alkaline, are caustic and ent into the cut surfaoes of tho pota toes, llotne-llreil Cnira. Itisnlwnys best wherever possiblo to breed cows on the same farm where they are to be kept. The cow is a very home-loving animal, and if taken from old associations, it will neither eat so hoartily nor givo so -rnuoh milk as it would if kept where it was grown. Wo have seen cows walk uneasily around the Held as if looking for a place to get out for days, and until the grass in the path they made was entirely destroyed. Of course snch cows cannot be profita ble milkers. After a cow has had one calf in her new home, it Beems more homelike to her, and if she is where she can see it and sometimes be with it, she will be less diBoontented, except for the first few weeks, while Bhe mainly anxious to be with her calf. Horticultural Hints. Give the orchard all the potash that it neods. Coarse, raw manure is not fit for tho garden. Toads, frogs and lizards are usoful in the garden. The gom melon is the best seller in the market. Pruno the quince tree aud traiu it to a single stem. Extra work in getting a good seod bod pays in garden work. Cut off all the bruised roots when planting a tree, but do not mutilate the top. A neglected orchard encumberBland that might bo used profitably for other purposes. A late orop of cabbage is easily grown, for the sood can be planted in the open ground. Five acres in cuoumbers for pickles will ordinarily pay as much as all the rest of the farm. Improving n Pasture Spring, The averago pasture spring is apt to be a mud hole because not protected from the cattle's feet. Where a spring is to furnish tho sole supply of water for a pasture year after year, it is worth while to make the moBt of it. If there is an old iron kettle with break in the bottom, it can be utilized grows ont again, and thoy must buy them very cheap to do that. Yon can not say too much against that praotioe in your paper, or caution breeders too ofton, ns the number of irotting-bred horses that como to this market minus tlieir foretops is astonishing.”—Horse Review. Controlling tho Ox Warble Fly. Tho warble or swelling on the baok of cnttlo is mused by tho lnrva of a ily which attaches its eggs to the hair on the legs, flanks nnd neck of the animal. These hatch and the larvra establish themselves under the skin, usually on either sido of tho backbone. Here they feed upon the animal juices until ready to pupate, causing the swolliug or warble. When growth is cumplotod tho grub leaveB tlio warble, SECTION OF WAnni,E. drops to the ground, crawls under the most convenient shelter, snch as a piece Of board, log, eto., and there transforms into tho fly or adult stage. There is a difference of opinion sb to how the grub gots under the skin. Homo entomologists claim that tho egg is taken into the stomach by the animals lioking themselves, hatch thero, adhering to the walls, then the grubs gradually work their way toward the surface, where they remaiu until fully grown. Others hold that the eggs hatch where they are laid and the young larvio bury themselves at once under the skin. Whatever method is employod the results are tho same. The best way to get rid of the pest is to kill the maggot. This may be done by squeezing them out. Place the thuuibB near the base of the swell ing and presH firmly nntil the grnb is forcod out. To prevent the nttaoks of the fly in summer, a mixture of 4 oz of sulphur, 1 gill of spirits of tar with a quart of train oil rubbed along the DIFFERENT STAOKS OF PUPA. ADULT PLT. spine, loins and ribs is useful. Traill oil can be used alone. As the fly does not move about from place to place freely, its eradication oil individual farms depends almost completely upon thoowuor.—New England Homestead. Cultivating mid Mpraylng Potatoes. The cultivation of potatoes mast be gin just as soon after planting as a crust forms on the surface of the Hold. Break up with somo kind of a harrow or a weoder. Keep the surface loosenod from thou until the plants stop growing late in the siimmor. After cultivating as long us possible with the harrow or weoder, use an or dinary corn cultivator, taking care not to run it too deep or very cloBe to the plants. The character of the sea son will detoriuino tho frequency of cultivation. Whouover weeds begin to appear or the surface of the soil be comes compacted, go over tho Hold with the cultivator. The following Is from a doctor con nected with an Institution in this city where there are many children: “There la nothing more Irritable to n cough than coughing. For somo time I had been so fully assured of this thnt I determined, for ono minute at least, to lessen tho number of coughs heard In a certain ward In a hospital of the institution. By the promise of re wards and punishments I succeeded in inducing them to simply hold their liroath when tempted to cough, and in a little while I was myself surprised to see how somo of tho children entire ly recovered from tho dlsonBO. Con stant coughing Is precisely llko scratch ing a wound on the outside of the body. 3o long aa it Is dono tho wound will not heal. Let a person when tempted to cough draw a long breath and hold It until it warms and aoothos every air cell, nnd some benefit will soon bo rooolved from tills process. Tho nitrogen which Is thus roflned acts ns an anodyne to tho mucous mem brane. allaying tho desire to cough nnd giving the throat nnd lungs a chance to heal. At the same time a suitable medicine will aid nature in her efforts to recuperate.” Tlatfy laforastloa. The power of modern guns of heavy raliber is such that every projectllo which does uot hit a thickly mounted part, or strike at a very acute angle, must cause frightful destruction In the Interior of a vessel, But as the heavy urmor covert hardly more than a third of all parte visible nbove water lino, it Is more likely that an un&rmorod part Is hit than that armor will be struck. One lucky ehot can disable a ship, a few lucky shots may decide a baattle. It is this consideration which causes the Germans to be so specially careful in the training of tbelr marine artillery. But It la not very likely that the percentage of hits wll Increase in future. The increased spood of tho vessel prevents thut. The heavy gunB, indeed, carry much farther; but. It would be useless waste of ammunition to fire at a ship more than three or four miles away, and a modern ship cannot afford to waste Its ammunition any more than Its coal. Don’t cut your horse’s foretop off if you ever expeottosell him to a dealer. A shaved foretop knocks from ten to fifty per cent, off of the market value of a roadster, a coach horse, a cab or a saddle horse. The practice of clip ping horses’ foretops, and generally from three to six indies of the mane with it, has becomo a vory common one. It never improves a horse's looks and is rarely benefioial.
