To thnu- samU its great merit |* KNOWN WORST DROUTH IN NUMBER OF YEARS The Spring Planted Oat Crop Suffer* Greatly. WHEAT NOT SO UNLUCKY Commissioner Nesbitt Reviews tlia Agricultural Conditions In an Intern eating Letter to Georgln Farmers, and Once More 1'olnta Out the Im portance of Thorough Preparation. Dkpaiitment or Aomcultuiib, Atlanta, July 1, 189a T1|K OAT CROP. The drouth which baa prevailed for eoveral weeks throughout the state in said to be the most aevere known, at this season of tho year, for 20 yean. Tho wheat crop, which in much heavier than usual, escaped with comparatively litt'r injury, but the oat crop, particu larly the spring planted floldn, and morn especially those In which the need were carelessly put in and imperfectly fertil ized, has Buffered severely—in some sec tions of the state may bo denominated a total failure. We need no bettor illus tration at tho importance of thorough preparation aud fertilization than is afforded by the yielde of thin crop throughout tho state. Tho resultn of the long continued drouth have most fully ronfirlned the oft repeated asser tion that successful cropping depends, in groat measure, on thorough prepara tion of the soil bofore the seed are pot in. It has been fully demonstrated that If we take the precaution of providing a well stored reservoir in a deeply pre pared seed bed, then when the demand for moisture comes, and the growing plants begin to droop for lack of neces sary rultt from above, Mother Nature will come to our rescue, and through the powor of capillary notion will pump op from the reserve supplv, which wo have stored in lower depths, the life, giving, revivifying moisture so neces sary for plant growth. Here wo have beautifully illustrated the mannor in which the intelligent farmer may, on tho very brink of failure, wrest ftt-CCUB from adverse circumstance*. If ho has studied nature's laws he knows that when the upper eoi' becomes dry, if tlioro is a reserve supply of moisture stored iu the subsoil, the power of capil lary action will draw it to the surface. But his knowledge must pot stop here. He mnst also have learned that it is im possible to keep this moisture in reach of the growing plants if a crust is al lowed to form and remain on the sur-' face. When that crust remains and is unbroken, no power can prevent the evaporation of the moisture which comes to tho surface through the capillary tubeB. It is the farmer’s province anil privilege to to break up these tubes that the motstnre may be held in check aud in rench ot the growing plants long enough for them to absorb its life giving properties before they become dissipated into the atmosphere. To do this ho must by constant RHALIXIW CULTIVATION keep a thin mulch of finely pulverized surface soil spread over his fields. The man who thoroughly finderstands the importance of this principle will never allow a crust to remain on bis laud longer than he can rnn A shallow, bread furrow to break it up. The need of this rapid work accentuate* the importance of wide cutting plow* and expanding cultivators. •. ’tv * >• 7* ,
