characterised for stupidity In boyhood or
girlhood have tarnaa out the mightiest
benefactors or benefactroases of the human
race. These things being so am I not right
In saying that In many css as God only
knows whst la the most appropriate thing
for you to do, anil He Is the one to ask?
And lot all parents and nil schools and all
universities and all oolleges recognise this,
sad a large number ot those who spent
tbalr best years In stumbling about busl-
nesses and oecupatlona, now trying this and
now trying that, and falling In all, would
be able to go ahead with a definite, de
cided and tremendous purpose, saying, “To
this end was 1 born.”
But my subject now mounts Into ths
momentous. Let me say tbat you are
made for usefulueae and haaveo. I
ludgo this from the way you aro built.
You go Into a shop where there le only
one wheel turning and that by a work
man’! foot on a treadle, and yon aay to
yourself, "Here Is something, good being
done, yet on a small scale," but It you go
Into a f aotory covering many aorta and you
find thousands ot beads pulling on thou
sands of wheels and shuttles flying and
ths whole scene bewildering with activi
ties, driven by weter or steam or eleotrla
power, you aonolude that the faotory waa
put up to do great work and on a vaat
soale. Now, I look at you, and If I should
And that you bad only one faoulty of body,
only out musole, only one nerve, If yon
could see but not bear or oould bear and
not tea. It you had tha use of only one toot
or one hand, and, aa to your higher nature,
If you had only oLa mental faculty and you
bad memory but no Judgment or Judgment
but no will, and If you had a soul with
only one oapaelty, I would aay not muoh
Is axpaeted of you. But stand up, O man,
and let me look you squarely lu the
faoel Eyee capable of seeing everything.
Ears oapsble ot hearing everything.
Hands capable of grasping everything.
Hinds wltb more wheels than any fas-
tory aver tamed, more power than any
Gorllaa engine ever moved. A soul that Will
outlive all tha universe except heaven, and
would outlive all heaven If the life of tbs
other Immortals were a moment short of
ths sternal. Now, what hat the world a
right to expect of you? What has God a
right to demand of you?. God It the great
est of economists In the unlvtrae, and He
makea nothing uaeleealy. and for what pur
pose did Ha build your uody, mind and soul
as thay are built? Thera are only two be
luga In tha unlvsraa who can answer that
question. Ths angtls do not know. Tha
•choola do not know. Tour kindred oannot
certainly know. God knows, gnd you ought
to know. A faotory running'at an expanse
of $600,000 a year and turning out goods
worth seventy oenta n year would not be
such an luoongrulty as you. O man, with
tueh stml-lnAnlte equipment doing noth
ing, or next to nothing, tn tha way ot use-
lu Instil “Whst shall I do?" you ask. Hy
brethren, my sisters, do not ask ms. Ask
God. Thara'a some path of Christian use-
fulneea open. It may be a rough path or
It may ha a smooth path, a long path or a'
short path. It may be on a mount ot con-
splculty or In a valley unobserved, but It la
a path on which you can start with such
faith and auoh satisfaction and such cer
tainty tbat you aan sry out In' the face of
earth and ball and heaven, "To this ead I
was born.
Tou have oxamlued the family Bible and
explored tbs family records, and you may
have seen daguerreotypes -of some of the
kindred of previous generations, you have
had photographs taken of wbst you wars
In boyhood or girlhood, and what you wars
ten years later, and It la very Interesting to
any one to be abls to look baok upon plo-
turns of .whst hs was ten or twenty or
thirty years ago. But bsve you ever had a
picture taken of whst you may be'and
what you will ha If you seek attar God and
feel the spirit’s regenerating power? Where
shall I plant the oamcra to take the pic
ture? I plant It on this platform. I direct
It toward you. Sit still or stand still while
I take tbs picture. It shall ba an Instan
taneous plcturo. Thorel I bsve It. It Is
done. You cun see the picture In Its Im
perfect state and get aoaa Idea ot what It
will be whan thoroughly developed. Thera
la your reaurreuted body, so brilliant that
tha noonday sun Is a patch ot midnight
compared wltb It. Them Is your soul, so
pure that all tha force* ot diabolism oould
not spot It wltb an Imperfection. Thera
Is your being, so mighty snd so swift
that Sight from bsavea to Mercury or
Mars or Jupiter and back again to heaven
would not weary you, and a world on oaqh
•bculdcr would not orueh you. An aye
that shall never shed n tear. An energy
that shall never feel a fatigue. A brow
that shall never throb with pula. You era
young again, though you died of decrepi
tude. You are well again, though you
oougbed or ehlvered youreelf Into tba tomb.
Your everyday associates are ths apostles
and prophets and martyrs, and the most
exulted eouls, masculine and feminine, of
all the centuries. Tbsnrcbangel to you no
embarrassment. God Himself your present
snd everlasting Joy. That la an tnstan.
taneous picture of what you may; be and
what I am sura some of you will be.
If you realise tbat It It an Imparfoet pic
ture my apology Is whst the apostle John
said, “It doth not yet appear wbatwe
shall be," “To this and was I born."
If I did not think so I would be over
whelmed with inelauaholy. The world

EFFECTS OF MACHINERY ON LABOR
Baealta of aa lavaetlgattaa Ordered by

Tba results ot a thorough investi
gation ordered by Congress and just
completed showing tha effects of ma
chinery on labor and incidental ques
tions constitute the thirteenth annual
report of the Commissioner of Labor.
The itatistiaa of oost reported involve
only the aotnal labor expense. Tha
report goes into detail, and among
other things says:
“In small-grain harvesting the self-
binder has roduoed the time for out-
ting, binding and abooking to abont
one-eighth of tbat ender the primitive
system. In threshing the 'ratio of
time used is more than 91 to 1 in
faTor of the maohine. In corn plant
ing the old method took nearly ais
times as long.
"One of tho comparisons sliowe
tho manufacture of 1000 oue-ponud
loaveu of bread is reduoed in cost
from $5.59 to $1.55, and iu time from
23 to 8 hoars; axle oUps, 1000 in
quantity, from $233.88 to $4.27 and
600 to 23 honri. In making 600 ponnda
of dairy tab batter maohiuery cat the
oost down from $10.60 to $1.78 and
from 126 to 12 hours. In diamond
eutting maohinory has reduoed the
time for font three-carats from 182 to
39 hours, bnt inoreased the cost from
$14.81 to $20.25.
“In lithographing the cost is out
from $92.87 per 1000 oopies ot a speci
fied size to $8.75 and the time from
106 to 80 bonra. In making tnntches
tho time is out from 250 to 29 hours
and the oost from $24 to $3. In
printing and publishing magazines—
10,000 oopies—the labor rednotioa
cited ia from 3170 to 14 hours and
from $302.50 to $4.62.
“Cigarettes, 100,000 in number,
manufactured by hand in 1880 and by
maohinery in 1895, cost relatively
897.44 and $11.48 and in time 990 anil
148 honra, the number of workmen
also being rednbed from 27 to 18. Ja
mining 100 tons ot bitnminons com
the hand oost in 1891 was $77.8$
and the time oonenmed 842 hour*.
Maohinery rednoei this in 1807 to
$43.40 and the 'time to 188 hours,
while the number of workmen also is
reduoed from 42 to 32."

Korean Kins'* American AiWIicr.
Mr. Greathouse, the American ad
viser of the King of Korea, whose dis
missal has been just announced, is a
remarkable man with an udventarons
career. By birth he is a Kentuckian,
by profession a lawyer, by inclination
a gonial jack-of-all-traden with a gen
ius for story telling. He has been
Attornay-General, politician, newspa
per editor and Consul-General in turn.
The Oriental manner of life exaotly
suited hie temperament. He owed
hie position in Korea to gifts as a tell
er of stories. The King appointed
him first Minister of Postal Affaire,
and later to a position in the Foreign
Office. His influence was great, bnt
wan not undisputed. In February
last be frustrated a plot against the
King’s life. The conspirators, who
belonged to tke Beactionary party,
adopted Western methods so far as to
emulate the example of Gny Fawkes.
Twelve hundred pounds of powder
were stored under tho Conncil Cham
ber and connected by eleotrio wire.
Mr. • Greathouse did not interfere
with the plans of the conspirators un
til the last moment, when he captured
several of them rodhanded. Bussian
influence has always been opposed to
him, and it is at the instance of tho
Bussian Minister that he is now re
ported to have been dismissed.—Lou
