How Gresley Settled It.
J’amcs C. Fernald, the- loxicogra
pher, has- written a little pamplilct
called “Better Say,” which contains
many interesting examples of the
correct and incorrect use of words.
Among them is the following:
News—“The latest news are good.”
Better say, “The latest news is
good.” .News, while plural in form,
is singular in construction. Two
friends at one time having d dis
pute on this matter agreed to refer
it to 1 Horace Greeley. As he was out
of the aity, the question was tele
graphed to him, “Are there any
news?”* Greeley promptly flashed,
back the answer, “Not a new.”—

Representative Dave Mercer,chair--
man of the committee on public
buildings and grounds, big and
brawny, sat at a table in the house-
restaurant with an aisthetic looking
New England, colleague.
“These new cereals are fine food.”
said, the New England member.
“Yes, I suppose so,” said Mr. Mer
cer, surveying the dry,, flaky stuff.
“You take the cereals,, arid if you
don’t mind 1 guess I’ll eat the whisk,
broom.”

man wliO'entered a street car with a
dog and attracted the attention of
an Irishman, who inquired wliat
kind of a dog it was. The young, 1
man replied:
“It is a cross between an ape and!
an Irishman.”
“Then we are both related to it,”
