Telephones.
The general manager of the telephone
company has prepared the following no
tice to be placed on each telephone in
the Dallas Exchange. It is but right that
tnat those who use the telephone service
should pay for it, Merchants do not keep
store to give away goods; farmers are
not expected to give away their corn; rail
roads are not expected to donate- their
tickets; neither should telephone com
panies be expected to give free their valu
able services and facilities. The Galnes-
boro Telephone Company has inaugurated
a fine system here, and should receive the
full patronage of the people.

The court room at New Boston,
Texas, has been the scene of a
moat remarkable case being tried
that of the State of Texas, vs
Col. John Hallum, charged with
shooting W. A. Forbes, a minis
ter, who hud ruined Hallum’s
home. Col. Hallum wub an utter
stranger, and previous to the
tyrial his “funeral” had been
preached all over the country for
the purpose of poisoning the peo
ple’s mind againBt him. The
lawyers, through fear of boycott
refused to defend him, and Col.*
Hallum, being a noted lawyer
and historian, defended himself,
like Paul, when arraigned before
Agrippa and Festus. Col. Hal
lum is an old man, his head
white as hoar frost, but his form
straight as an Indian’s. There
he stood before a “packed” jury,'
and in a crowded court room, and
spoke for three hours, and his
speech was filled with pathos and
Promethean fire; it was the most
eloquent and forceful ever deliv
ered in the history of American
jurisprudence. Its publication
gives to the world the greatest
piece of forensic literature ex
tant. At times during his speech
there was not a dry eye in the
audience. Several times t the
bailiff had to remove the crowd
that crushed him in an endeavor
to hear his every word ; he was
interrupted by a minister’s wife
presenting him with a bouquet
of flowers. The jury acquitted
him without leaving the box.
The Sickle Publishing Co. Mem
phis, Tenn. has published all the
facts in the case, and Col. Hal
lum’s famous speech in book
form, and sells it for 50 cents di
rect. It £is worth twice that
amount, and anyone who believes
in the virture of woman and the
^protection of home should read it.
