Richest Alan in the World.
The fortune of an axlremely
rich man is always an interesting
subject of speculation; when it
comes to considering the fortune
of the richest man in the wor l<4|
everybody is interested in it,
probably more in a spirit of cu
riosity than anything else. It.
is usually the case that when a
fortune passes $1,000,(MX) it is apt
to be magnified in the public
mind. One million dollars is a
sum so enormous that it is diffi
cult for the average mind to
grasp its significance, hence,gen
erally speaking, ten millions ex
pressed in figures are no mere
impressive than one million.
That is why so many million
aires. after death, are found to
have left estates smaller than
they were credited with poss
essing during life.
It is probable that, in likernan-
ner. the wealth of John D. Rocke
feller has been estimated at too
high a figure; still, the fact re-
mnins'that by calculating from
the Rize of the dividends he re
ceives from the corporations in
which he is interested it is possi
ble to arrive at an approximate
ly. correct estimate of bis fortune.
A business ' man closely associ
ated with Mr. Rockefeller and
said to be in a position to know,
is quoted in the New York cor
respondence of the Philadelphia
Press as asserting that Mr. Rocke
feller is now. by far the richest,
mail in the world, worth more
than twice as much as any other
American citizen. His Standard
Oil stock, at the market rates,is
wort'll $500,000,000, from which
alone for several years he has re
ceived dividends of $40,000,000
tier annum,'or a little less than
$1,000,000 a week. Besides this
lie has other sources of income
flint brings him about $85,000,-
000 a year, so that his total in
come from all sources is not less
than $75,000,000 a year, as it has
been for several years, and there
is no suggestion of check to the
enormous inflow.
That is to say,Mr. Rockefeller’s
income for a single year is more

living outside of towns and cities
will have letters and newspapers
delivered at their doors.

This marks the finish of our
greatest efforts. Energy, skill
and indomitable will always
succeed. We will not boast of
either of these virtues, but leave
to the public to say how far we
have been able to prove them
when our stock arrives. We
are looking for it daily. It will

Ropes of beads and semi-prec

able fad, and three different
strings of heads are worn at the
game time.
Mexican hand’work is seen on
the season’s gowns, and black

effect, skirt hip-yokes, and hands
of Mexican work.
Voile and canvas will be the
favorite moterials for the summer
frock, and the popular colors are
champagne, pearl-gray,pale lilac,
green, blue, and rose.
With the collarless bodice comes
the demand for the wide dog-
collar, stands of pearls, rows of
coral or turquoise encircling the
throat and fastening with clasps.
In the dress goods realm there
is no prettier or more appropri
ate material for the summer
frock than Lansdowne, which
comes in white, black,and various
shades.
The coats that are not made on
loose lines include the blouse

than the enormous fortune left
by William H. Vanderbilt to his
sons. In ten years Mr. Rockefel
ler’s wealth will be nearly $100,-
000,000 from his annual income
alone. At the moment, it is said
lie can lay his hand on more
ready cash than anyjten men in
New York, including Russell
Sage and the Vanderbilts and
Goulds. There are, of course, a
dozen sermons in the flood of
gold pouring into Rockefeller’s
coffers. How long will it be be
fore he will have a corner on the
wealth of the United States ? Is
such enormous power concentrat
ed into the hands of one man a
good thing for the public inter
est? Do not such aggregations
of capital cause discontent in the
masses ? Should there be a legal
limit to private fortunes? There
are but a few of the queries that
suggest themselves.
There are others equally seri
ous that will occur to those who
read of Mr. Rockefeller’s riches
—which riches he can never see,
and never enjoy in the sense
that an average man in well-to-
do circumstances enjoys his prop
erty. What can the man possi
bly want of so such money.
