THE NEWSPAPER.
Hon. John Temple Graves, edi
tor ot the Atlanta News, in an
article prepared for the Suniiv
South gives his idea of journalism
now and in the future. Among
other good tilings he says:
“The nmu who is amiable and
fair, and thoughtful and wise,
wins and retains the esteem of
his fellows, and the newspaper
which is good tempered, free
from malice, just in all things,
fearless in speech and disinterest
ed it patriotism, commands affec
tion and molds opinion the world
over.
“1 think beyond these that the
popular temperament in the in
dividual is the popular temper
in the newspaper which is at lust
the aggregate of individuals.
Public opinions always protests
had temper in a newspaper. It
always resents prosecution. Men
have been persecuted by news
papers into the governorship of
Georgia, and more than one pub-
lii man' Has dated his success to
the popular resentment ugainst,
the injustice and bitterness of
his treatment by the press and
the busting of the opposition.
“The people like amiability,
cheerfulness, optimism, and they
must cordially incorse courtesy
and magnanimity in all the rela
tions of life.
“A lit le narrow, spiteful jeal
ousy in a public journal is as
distasteful* to the people who
read i.t us the same spirit is dis-
agreeahle in the individual with
whom it is necessary to associate.
“The modern newspaper is at
last the model now expressed in
daily, editions of many qualities.
, “The newspaper of the future
has yet a vast career of useful
ness and a vast increase of pow
er. it is the reflex of the age’s
doings and of the age’s achieve
ments. The very eagerness and
the alertness of the times makes
the guarantee of its continued
prosperity. Men rtnd women
must and will know of what is
going on in all the spheres of in
terest that touch them, and no
other mediun save the newspap
er will carry the information.
“But the newspaper of the fut-‘
ure must of necessity be briefer
and more condensed than the
blanket sheet of today. Men are
living too fast., and have now
either too much to do or too
much to enjoy to spend time in
the multiplied pages of the daily
newspaper. As is now, half of
the people who read only the
head lines of articles, and skim
tiie surface of these columns as a
swallow skims the water, touch
ing lightly as it passes.”

Hearts
Are due to Indigestion. Ninety-nine of every
one hundred people who have heart trouble
can remember when It was simple indiges
tion. It is a scientific fact that ail cases of
heart disease, not organic, are not only
traceable to, but are the direct result of indi
gestion. Alt food taken into the stomach
which fails oi perfect digestion ferments and
iwells the stomach, puffing it up against the
heart. This interferes with the action of
the heart, and in the course of time that
delicate but vital organ becomes diseased.
