The day has come to us like
friends in disguise, bringing
priceless gifts from an unseen
hand; but if we do not use them,
they are borne silently away,
never to return. Each succes
sive morning new gifts are
brought, but if we failed to ac
cept thoeo that, were brought yes
terday and the day before.we be
come less and less able to turn
them to account, until the ability
to appreciate and utilize them is
exhausted. Wisely was it said

edge by study, lost, health by
temperance and medicine, but
lost time is gone forever.

In a log-cabin, in the back-

holding a boy eighteen months
old, and wondering if she will be
able to keep the wolf from her

in a few years we find him chop
ping wood and tilling the little
clearing in the forest to help his
mother. Every spare hour is
spent in studying the books he
lias borrowed, but cannot buy.

WHAT DOES OUR TOWN N'KKI)?
As one who reads and admires
your Home Circle department
and who believes it is moulding
public opinion and doing good,
we would contribute a few
thoughts taking for our text:
“What is the best thing that
could happen to our town in
1905.”
If there are circumstances to
be changed, or evil to be averted
it is folly to bide our heads—os-
trich-iike in their presence. It
is not sane nor safe to simply
pump
well, nr shoot the faithful dog
for barking at the burglar. “No
man liveth to himself.” Some
body was responsible for the in
quisition of the Iroquoi8*»-for the
hell und holocaust kindled on the
sacred path of the happy holi
days. The curso causeless shall
not come. Not earthquakes,
famine or tempest, but man him
self-is his own worst foe, and
greatest menance to his kind.
Man’s inhumanity to man makes
countless millions mourn. Eve
ry one helps to mend or mar the
fabric of the future. Water does
not go higher or get better than
its source. Human efFort strives
in vain to purify the stream of
life if a hog happens to be-hid-
Men in the fountain. Only good
trees produce good fruit. The
magolia pouring perfume from a
hundred thousands chasteued
cups received its strength and
support from roots beneath the
soil, and its sweetness from the
dew. 8d our security rests upon
the ground and granite virtues
of truth, honor and fidelity, our
success is a quotation of worship,
righteous and charity fron*above.
Business clubs, labor unions, po
litical parties, social guilds and
ecclesiastical machinery have
lheir place and part; but they
stand only in the Gentile court,
while integrity, industry, patriot
ism, friendship and true religion
occupy the heart’s “holy of ho
lies”—the royal arcanum of the
soul. “Get right with God and
do unto others as you would have
others do unto vou.”
What, our city needs in 1905,
and all ififtrig the weary waste of
years—is a “Pentecost of Spirit
ual Responsibility;” a clearer
vision of moral oughtness; avice-
likc grip on the eternal and eth
ical imperative; a fresh baptism
of hrotherliness; every able hand
faithfully employed at fair com
pensation; stainless honesty ii
every business house; peace, pu
rity and plenty in every homo; a
vacant jail, full schools and
churches; cards and dice relieved
from their active and sinful ser
vice; pvery “humbug retired
from duty us soon as their copy
rights expire;” the paper realiz
ing that many things not known
as “news” are richly wortii at
tention, and much parading as
“the news” before a curious pub
lic ought to perish a foundling
on the inhospitable door stops of
friendless notice; stores closed
on Hunday-r-giving clerk and pro
prietor opportunity for home, so
ciability, reading and religion;
respectable citizens so keeping
the Sabbath and ol>eying iciw—
human and divine, in totter and
spirit, that the ev.il inclined of
the community may be shamed
into courses of law and order or
at least find no encouragement or
extenuations for ins violation.
And finally axalt maa and merit
above money ; sense above sensa
tion ; eulightment Shove enter
tainment; con8cierve« above cold
calculation; God above greatness,
greed or glory. “For righteous
ness exalteth a nation, but sin is
a reproacli to any people.”
A MATTER 0^HEALTH
Grass stains yield to kerosene
or alcohol.
If you put matting down be
sure the floors are thoroughly
dry before it is laid.
A woman would be in despair
if nature had formed her as fash
ion makes hor appear.
Instead of envying another
girl her good looks, the wise one
goes after beauty herself and gets
it.
It sometimes happens that a
woman loves a man for his money
and hates him for the hold lie lias
on it.
When in doubt, about, what to
do for the baby ask the dry goods
clerk. He is the next best au
thonty to a wet nurse.
Machine grease (sewing ma
chine) should be washed in cold
soap suds. Pninfc is removed by
means of spirits of turpentine
Don’t try to be pretty without
arranging your hair prettily. It
can’t be done. Dress the hair
first. That is the beauty rule.
Then make your hair look pretty.
The woman who can make good
butter, darn socks to a f razle,cook
a meal that tickles her husband
and keep the children’s necks and
ears clean seldom figures is a di
vorce case.
Look not mournfully into the
past—it comes not bnck again;
wisely improve the present—it is
thine; go fortli to meet the shad-
owy future without fear and with
a manly heart.
Many a man goes forth in the
evening and spends enough to
buy Ins wife a seal skin jacket,
hut when he awakens the next
morning ho has nothing to show
for it save fur on his tongue.
I’erfumed gloves are liked by
some women. Mix together four
drops of extract of ambergris and
two ounces of spirits of wine.
Apply to the inside of the gloves
with a linen rag or piece of
sponge.
An economical young lady who
does not live more than a thous
and miles from town wrote her
own wedding invitations recent
ly and got it “your presents
requested.” She wasq’t making
much of a mistake after all, but
it is considered verv bad form to
put it just tliut way.

Piedmont, Ala.
If the kind editor will allow
me space in his newsy little
paper I will try to give you
some dots from this place.
Piedmont is situated in a
beautiful valley, and is almost
surrounded by small moun
tain chains. It is very near
the central point on the Sea
board between Birmingham
and Atlanta.
We have a population of
2,300. We have two cotton
factories, two wood-working
establishments, five churches,
good streets and water works,
three or four fellows who
know it all, half a dozen men
who stay chock full of booze,
six or eight young men who
can’t possibly find a job at
anything, and a dozen women
who go from one house to an
other talking other people’s
business. Besides these we
have many other good things
too numerous to mention.
The amount of guano that
was hauled away from this
point don’t denote any re
duction in the cotton crop, it
we know anything.
We arc certamlg glad to
hear of the many improve
ments Dallas is making.
In company with Mr. W. J.
Rutherford, our popular jew

fact that a slow rain fell al
