He knows that the 61 years experience in wagon building which stands behind every wagon is a guarantee that when he buys a Weber he buys the highest quality. Sixty-one years of wagon building have resulted in the Weber wagon of today, which, for correct design, excellence of material and conscientious construction, stands with out a peer — King of all farm wagons. Iy ,d T.L. Varner, Hiram Only a Sunbeam. Only a stray sunbeam! Yet perchance it hath pierced some wretched abode, gladdened some stricken heart, or its golden light found its way through the leafy branches of some wild wood, kiss ed the moBS-covered bank where the tiny violet grew and caused shades of, beauty to adorn its lovely form. Only a gentle breeze! But how many aching brows hath it^fan- ned, how many hearts cheered byjts gentle touch. Only one stray bullet that pierced the noble soldier-boy as he trod the lonely midnight round, faithfully guarding the precious lives intrusted to his keeping, and the life blood slow ly ebbed out, and the sunbeam fell on the cold face of the dead. Only a drop of ink! And yet it oarried the news of death to anxious ones at home, and caused the tear of anguish to trickle down the furrowed cheek of widowed mother. Only a frown! But it left a sad, dreary ache in that child’s heart, and the quivering lips and tearful eyes told how keenly he felt it. Only a smile! But ah! how it cheered the broken heart, en gendered a ray of hope, and oast a halo of light around the unhap py present; made the bed-ridden one forget its present agony for a moment as it dwelt in Bunshine of joy and lived in the warmth of that smile. Let us all increase our giving of smiles during 1008. They cost nothing and are of un told value, especially in the Home Oirole. able a person to keep hiB footing bravely. Your chances of success in life will be teu fold greater if you have secured a wide circle of good friends by your obliging, gentlemanly manners. No one cares about trusting -or rect-m- mending a person of whom they know little or nothing except that they exist in the same com munity. You will often advance your interests more by spending a social evening in a respectable family, than you will by sitting in your room and pouring oYer your money matters, or writing a whole package of business let ters. Many men are said to be self- taught. No man was ever taught in any other way. Do you sup pose a man to be a backet to be hung on the well of knowledge and pnmped full? Man is a crea ture that learns by the exertion of his own faculties. There are aids to learning of various kinds; but no matter how many of these aids a man may be surrounded by, after all, the learning is that whioh he acquires himself. Whether be is in college or out of college, in school or out of school, every man mast educate himself. And in our times and in this community every man has the means ot doing it. Choose the Best Society. It should be the aim of every young person to find an entrance into good society. By good we do not mean fashionable society That often merits least of all this honorable title. A good social circle is one where sound princi pies, refined manners, and intell igent ideas are the characteristics of its members. Many a young man has gone to ruin by choosing the society of the low and vulgar, instead of those whose influence would be elevating. It is always so easy to fall into evil, but often it requires hard work to gain a sure footing in a refined circle. But the end is with the effect. If a young man desires to sharpen his intellect, he will find that a judicious mingling with society will do this better than digging forpver over his books. There is a wonderful amount of eleotricitv in the social atmosphere, and the galvanic battery of the social cir cle will not fail to elicit many brilliant sparkles. If one desires to improve in manners be can never do so ex cept by mingling with the refined and good. Diffidence often keeps back those who have in early life but few social advantages. The only way to overcome this pain ful difficulty is to plunge in. It is one of the most easily cured of all maladies. A bath in the brae ing ocean of social life yill en- There are a thousand pretty, engaging little ways, which ev ery person may put on without running the risk of being deemed affected or foppish. The sweet smiles, the cordial bow, the earn est movement in addressing 1 friend, the inquiring glance, the graceful attention which is so captivating when united with self-possession—these will insure us the good regards of even t churl. Above all, there is a cer tain softness of manner which should be cultivated, and which, in either man or woman, adds charm that almost entirely com pensates for lack of beauty, and inestimably enchances the latter where it does not exist. , The Stingy Man., Th6v say I am Btingy. All right, let it go at that. I am stihgy. But did you over hear that I was a dead beat? There was a time when I threw my money away and stood off my creditors in order that I might be known as a gootl fellow, but now I save my money and pay my debts. There was a time when I spent 910 in an evening bumming around with the boys, and owed the tailor for the clothes on my back; when I went riding every Sunday with a liv ery rig, and did not pay my board, when I thought it an evidence of smartness to buy oigars and drinks for other people, but now I think it an evidence of sound sense for a man to save the money for which he iB compelled to work, in order that he might realize something from it. For this I am called stiugy, but I can stand it; in fact, I rather enjoy the titles, for there are are so many shjftless fools in this town who imagine that they are good fellows, hoping to realize on their wanton waste of money that I am glad I cannot be class ed among them. Ask the bill collectors about the good fellows. The bill col lectors will tell you a story worth listening to and they will also tell you that the stingy men pay promptly. There are lot of old good fellows in Atchinson who have not money enough to burv them, and there are stingy old fel lows in Atchinson who began life under more unfavorable circum stances than the good fellows, and the stingy fellows are rich I recommend that the young fel lows deserve the name of being stingy, for a stingy man seldom stints himself or his family, but he often refuses to throw his hard earned money away, and ver/ properly. A stingy man is sel dom bothered for donations, and altogether, I like the name.— (Found among the papers of an Atchinson man who died rich. —Atchison Globe.
