The Jews.
Editor New Era: I noticed au
article in "a recent issue of your
paper entitled, ‘‘Jews. 1 ’ If you
will allow ine space I will give
your readers a brief liiBtory of
this much-tulked of race of hu
manity.
The name, Jews, was first giv
en to Hie descendants of Abra
ham, who, after their exile in
Babylon, emigrated from the
east side of the Euphrates to
Canaan. Their lirst, name was
Hebrews. Jacob and his family,
of seventy souls, went to Egypt
and settled at Goshen. Here
they remained 430 years, and
were well treated, at first, but a
new ruler of Egypt saw that they
were increasing in such numbers
that he became alarmed, and put
them under bondage. Thoir de
liverer, Moses, led them in their
exodus from Egypt about the
year 1320 B. G.; but the “land
of promise” was not theirs until
about forty years later. Moses,
in the nioantimo died, and Joshua
becaino their leader, They were
compelled to fight for the land
that God had promised them as
an inheritance, but it was sever
al years before all the tribes
were cor.auered.
After tlio death of Joshua
(1214 B. 0.), the bond between
tlio tribes became looseued; each
attended to his own affairs, and
they were soon conquered by the
surrounding tribes. Then came
the period of the “judges,” who
freed the nation. Among them
were: Deborah, Gideon, Joplilha,
damson, and the prophet Samuel,
Samuel was the greatest Jew
since Moses. The people forced
him to give them a king, this he
did in the person of Saul. Saul
proved to be a warrior but not a
statesman. He was succeeded
by his son-in-law, David. David
was by tyr the greatest king that
ever sat on the tl rone of Israel.
His reign and that of his son,
Solomon, are held to be the gold
en age of Jewish history. The
remaining tribes of Canaan were
thoroughly conquered during this
time, and the Jewish kingdom
stretched from the Euphrates to
the Red Sea. Jerusalem

mous expense of Solomon’s court
soon beggard the nation, and his
reign was, in many years, almost
a failure. Jealousy and discon

caused a split in the kingdom.
Two kingdoms were now* set up,
the kingdom of Judah under Re-

conquered by the Assyrians, and
the mass of people were carried

by their mingling and intermar

On the nightnf Mar^d, 1908,
death visited the home of Mr.
E.-F. Lankford and removed
from this world of sorrow
and affliction his wife, Mrs.
Attic Lankford. All that lov
ing hands could do could not
thwart the grim monster death
that had been hovering over
the once happy home for,many
days. Death did not come
unexpected, but when it did
corne it was a great shock to
her loving family and many
frieds.
Sister Attie bore her afflic
tions with all the fortitude of
a cosecrated Christian, never
nmrmered or complained, but
feeling at all times that she
was serving out the will of the
Master, and at His call she
was willing and ready to go.
Sister Attie was a consistent
member of New Hope church,
where her remains were inter
red. The funeral services
were conducted by Rev. M. F.
Waddell, her pastor.
She was also a member of
the F. K & C. O. U. of A. and
was a consistent member of
that order. She was a model
wife, a kind, loving and affec
tionate mother, a good neigh
bor and a friend to all. She
will he missed in the eqmmu--
nity in which she lived, Sn the
church of which she was a
was member, and in the order that
she was so filial to. And those
who will miss her the most is
the heart-broken husband and
the three little girls who mourn
the loss of a loving wife and
affectionate mother.
Besides the husband and
three little children she leaves
one brother and two sisters,
and a host of relatives and
friends. Those who knew her
best loved her most, and just
before she bid farewell to this
world, she called her family
and relatives to her bed-side
and told them not to weep for
her, for she was going
home to die no more. Said
she wanted them all to live
right and meet her in heaven.
May the last words of the
dear wife be a comfort to the
heart-broken husband, and
may God help him and the
little ones, that are entrusted

Road Law.
Dallas, Ga., April 6, 1008.
Hon. W. E. Spinks.
County Attorney.
Dear Sir:
Please give me an official opin
ion as to whether or not under
the alternative road law—now of
force in this county—boys be
tween the age of 16 and 21 years
are subject to road doty.
Very truly yours,
B. E. Grokbr, Ordinary.
Hon. B. E. Oroker, City.
Dear Sir: Replying to yonr
favor of this date requesting an
opinion as to whether a boy be
tween 16 and 21 years of age is
subject to road duty under the
alternative road law adopted by
this county, I beg to say, there
are three separate and distinct
methods of working the public
roads of the state of Georgia, and
any county thereof may adopt
any one of the three it chooses.
The first is the old road law
which requires so much service
of each male inhabitant between
the age of 16 and 60 years.
The second is what is known
as the alternative road law which
is found in sections 678 to 688,
inclusive, of the first volume or
the code of 1806. This law is put
into operation by a recommendaj
tioD of the grand jury, and by
section 674 of this law it is pro
vided also that each male citizen
between the age of 16 and 60
years shall be subject to road du
ty (except those specially ex
empted).
The other is also an alternative
road law and is known as the four
day law, and may. be found in
the acts of 1896, page 78, and the
several acts amendatory thereof.
This law requires a road duty on
ly of each male inhabitant be
tween the age of 21 and 60 years,
and is pat into effiect by a direct
vote of the people.
The second of the above named
methods being of force in this
county, it follows that there is a
road duty required of each male
citizen of the county between
the age of 16 and 60 years.
It requires only a casual peru
sal, it seems to me, to reach shis
conclusion, but if there was ever
any room for doubt, it is now no
longer an open question. In the
case of Maxwell by next friend
vs. Willis commissioner, 128 Geor
gia, page 19, yon will find onr su
preme court, after a full review
of all the statutes on the subject
and the amendments thereto,
held in so many words that all
citizens between the age of 16
aud 60 in [counties where they
have adopted the road law under
which we are operating are snb*
ject to road duty.
You will also find by reference
to the above authorities, that the
