ARE WE ASLEEP?
What is the matter with us?
Aie we asleep? The Atlanta
Constitution makes this query to
the people of .Atlanta'in a verv
r-c-int issue of their paper:
When Atlanta “oes to sleep what
happens to the rest, of the state?
1 notice in today’s Georgian(8th),
that under the head of
ai l Progress of the Now South,”
Georgia allows one small item,
namely a $60,000 oil mill for
Ad"l for improvements during
the past week. The 6tate of Ok
lahoma shows twenty-two items,
aggregat ing a capital of nearly
two millions and this in one week !
What is the matter?
It seems that,since the “panic”
the people in Georgia are more
exercised over politics than any
thing else,and instead of “waking
up” to the fact that other states
are going ahead and getting
ahead, thev are waiting for a so
lution of certain problems that
concern things purely political
and the lumber men nnd brick
men are “up against it!” There
seems at abnormal lack of de
mand for building material and
the prices have gone down, down,
down! A demand for anything
will always bring prices up 'and
we need no better proof of the
dirth ;>f enterprise than a lack
ing demand tor building materi

Lotus wake up! Boost your

more than all, boost your state!
What advantage has Oklahoma
over our own state? What ad
vantage has any state over Geor
gia? Georgia—this grand old
state that is called the “Empire
state of the south 1” Her in
finite possibilities; her unsur
passed resources; and her civic
pride, of which she has always
boasted; where is there a state
that has more to commend her?
Like SpartacuB, I feel like saving
as he did to his fellow gladiators,
“Is old Sparta dead? 1b that proud
Grecian spirit frozen in your
veins?” Is Geirgia dead? Is
that proud Georgiiu spirit frozen
in your veins? Stop talking
much politics and wake up to
the fact that other states are
busy and that we cannot afTord
to lag.
Look at Nashville, with her
100,000 souls, a gain of nearly
one hundred per cent in ten
years! Behold Memphis with
nearly 200,000 inhabitants, a gain
of over one hundred per cent in
the last decade! Are these cities
laggiug behind? Atlanta, who
has achieved the most enviable
reputation of all of them for en
prise, plnck and “go-ahead-ative-
ness,” among our northern and
western neighbors, can she afTord
to let Nashville and Memphis
forge ahead of her?

Tiled nerves, with that “no ambition"
Feeling that Ih commonly felt In spring or
early summer, can lie easily and quickly
slteied by taking what is known to drug
gists everywhere as Dr. Shoop’s Restura-

feeling within 48 hours after beginning to
take the Restorative. The bowels get
sluggish in the winter time, the circula
tion often slows up, the kidneys are in
active, and evon the heart in many cases
grows decidedly weaker. Dr. Shoop’s
firstorn-lvc is rccognl/.ed everywhere us

It builds up nnd slrcngtliens the worn-out
weakened nerves; it sharpens the failing
appetite, and universally aida digestion.

Fighting Scale Insects.
In nothing do farners more
need expert advice than in the
extermination of insects that
threaten the destruction or
their hard-raised crops. Es
pecial study has been given
to the cotton boll weevil, par
ticularly malicious in Texas
and Louisiana. The investi
gation shows that dry weather
is destructive to the pest, but
the entomologists agree that
the worse enemy to the wee
vil is the native ant, solenopsis
f ;eminata. Climbing the stalk,
or the possible nectar of the
blossom, it encounters the
weevil and seizes him. The
rapid spread of the ant is there
fore much to be desired by
cotton growers, and as a mat
ter ot fact the tribe is advanc
ing. Imported parasites have
been tried against the weevil,
but with poor results. This
native combatant is best.
Another large field for the
entomologists, both state and
federal, says the Craftsman,
is the study of washes to be
used for the San Jose scale,
the enemy of orchards from
California, where it firgt ap
peared, eastward to the Atlan
tic border, where it now in
fests peach, plum, pear and
apple trees. Lime-sulphur
washes have been experiment
ed with, the bureau of chemis
try aiding essentially in find
ing the best proportions and
the best manner of application.
An efficient formula is found
to be 50 gallons of water, 20
pounds of quicklime and 15
pounds of either flour or flow
ers of sulphur, boiled togeth
er for one hour. Salt and
sugar have both been tried
with the above ingredients,
but the bureau finds they add
nothing to the efficacy of the
lime and sulphur. Various
other injurious growths on
fruit trees are also killed by
this simple wash.
But better, because less
trouble, is tlie destruction of
the scale insects by beetles
and birds. This subject has
received the careful attention
twenty-nine species of birds
are known to eat it. They in
clude woodpeckers, sparrows,
vireos, wrens and bluebirds.
Indeed, fifty-seven species of
birds feed upon some scale in
sects and their eggs. Who
knows but that, without the
aid of birds, the various scales
would rob us of all our fruit?
