THE NEW ERA,
Dallas, Ga.
Birmingham is Praised.
Gen. C. A. Evans, the new
ly elected head of the United
Confederate Veterans, who
succeeds Gen. Stephen D. Lee,
hrs this to say in praise of
Birmingham for the manner
in which it entertained the
old veterans:
“It was a splendid reunion
in every respect,” he said
“and one of the greatest we
ever had. Birmingham left
nothing undone to provide for
the comfoit and entertainment
of the visitors. Particular
care was shown in the arrang-
ments made for the private
soldier. They were given
comfortable accommadations;
had large and roomy quarters
in which to sleep and abund
ant food, and were amply pro
vided for in every way.
“Everything was admirably
planned and skillfully execu
ted. The private homes of j
the people were freely thrown ,
open to the visitors, and a
most cordial welcome was ex
tended.
“The young men were pres
ent at the reunion in large
numbers, and Mr. Apperson,
one of the most enthusiastic
and active, was continued as
commander of the Sons of
Confederate Veterans.”

The Spurious Congress.
The Sixtieth congress will pass in
to history as tho spurious congress.
It lias done nothing worthy a gn at
representative body. In its appro
priations it has been more extrava
gant than any of its predecessors,
and will leave tile government $00,-
000,000 in arrears on the first day of
J uly next, and $16,000,000 in arrears
on July 1, 1009, so that money will
have to he borrowed even for rui
ning expenses. It has refused to
modify the tariff even on would pulp
and print paper. It has enacted « lr-
rency legislation of the worst possi
bly type, legislation not in favor of
tlie interests of the people at large,
but of Wall street.—Macon News.
