OUR POSITION.
Tlio New Era has from time to
time been subjected to criticism
by men who did not agree with
the position assumed by the pa
per on various questions
Always ,legitimate criticism,
especially if well deserved,
justifiable, but when it is only
out of petty spite and narrow
mindedness there is no excuse,
and such criticism has no weight
except with those who them
selves are too narrow-minded to
appreciate the position of one
who lias an opinion and dares to
express it.
The New Era—under the pres
ent management—has always
striven for what itseditor thought
best for the good of the people of
the county of Paulding. It mat
ters not that at times there have
been those who differed from the
views entertained by tins paper.
We have a sort of silent contempt
for any man who lias well de
fined opinions of Ins own, but
whe i the lime comes ho is afraid
to ( xpress them because of the
fears of criticism from those who
think otherwise.
Men who are men admire a per
son who has a mind of his own
oven though his opinions may of
ten differ from theirs. Thus it
is that the New Era has a multi
tude of good friends who have
not always thought upon politics
and other tilings according to the
beliefs of the editor of this pa
per. These friends we
ciate, and we believe that they
know that we have always tried
to do what seemed to ub the
best.
For a number of years, in spite
of adverse criticism, we have
<1 lie what appeared to us good
lor the welfare of our people.
The New Era has been doing
v hat it could to build up Dallas,
tn advance the best interest of
the county, and to bring togeth
er into closer fellowship the peo
ple of the town aud the country.
We believe that the mission of
a country paper is to build up the
county and in every way to en
deavor to aid the people in the
struggle for better thinga.
No matter what may happen or
wha't. other people may think, as
long us the preseut management
has control, the New Era will
continue to exuress itself when
ever it deems an opportune time
has come. Where the path of
duty is we hope to be found
treading therein. It always
lends strength to one struggling
to briug to pass something that
is for the interest of the people
to have staunch friends standing
by him lending encouragement
to such efforts as are made. The
New Era has had numbers of
friends to uphold it in its course
—and we wish them to know that
we value what they have done.
We only wish that those who are
our friends will continue to stand
by us. With their help we hope
yet to aid in bringing about great
things for our people. “A strong
pull, a long pull, and a pull all to
gether” will accomplish wonders.
The New Era is willing to help
out. town and county and the
people in every laudable effort.
And the New Era expects its
readers to 6tand by it in the ef
fort. to accomplish whatever we
ean for the best interest of our
people.
COURT ADJOURNED FRIDAY.
The time of the superior court
last week was occupied in the
trial of criminal cases. The
court was busy from Monday till
Friday at noon disposing of these.
One felony case was tried.
This was the case of^the state
against lias Bone, charged with
the offense of assault with in
tent to murder. He was acquit
ted by the jury. A negro, Tom
Braswell, was convicted of pub
lic indecency and sentenced to
serve twelve months in the chain
gang. No other cases of impor
tance were tried.
Judge Edwards said in dis
charging the grand jury that
Paulding county has a heavi.er
superior court docket than any
other county in the Tallapoosa
circuit.
There has been some talk of
having n county court, to dispose
of the misdemeanor cases and
the smallorcriminal cases. When
it is considered that in a county
court only twelve^jurors are in
attendance and have to be paid
and that these can try practi
cally all of the misdemeanor
cases without having the full
panels used in a superior court,
it seems that there is some force
in the argument that is put up
by those favoring a county court.
And this is especially true when
it is taken into consideration that
noarly a whole week of superior
court could have been saved by
this method, and that the ex
penses of running a county court
are very much less than the ex
penses of the supeiior court.
The Legislature Adjourned.
The legislature adjourned last
week leaving unfinished a good
deal of business. It was under
stood at the time of adjournment
that the governor would call an
extra session for the purpose of
enacting laws to govern the
working of the convicts, and pos
sibly other things may be includ
ed in the call for an extra session.
It is expected that the extra ses
sion will be held beginning prob
ably some time next week.
Among the bills passed by the
legislature were:
A constitutional amendment
giving a pension to every confed
erate veteran and widow with
less than .$1,500.
A law compelling telegraph
companies to deliver messages
promptly under penalty of a fine.
Pure registration law.
Primary election law.
Law creating “Georgia volun
teers.”
Making pension commissioner
elective by the people.
Law creating “Greater Atlan
ta.”,
The anti-lobbping bill which
was discussed was not passed.
Drakctown Baptist Institute.
Next Monday, August 24th, is
the opening day of Draketown
Baptist Institute. This will bo
the beginning of the second year
of this school. The work there
from the beginning has been very
satisfactory. There are many
reasons why this year should bo
better than last year.
•Prof. S. D. McCormick, a grad
uate of Howard college in Ala-
appre - bama, has been elected president,
lie bears the reputation of being
a strong man for the place. The
same lady teachers that were
there last year will be back this.
Practically all of the old pupils
and many new ones will greet
the faculty on the first day. Go
out to the opening. Your time
will be well spent.
Election for Local Tax
ation for Schoos.
The necessary number of names
on petition has been secured to
call an election for local taxation
for schools in the Dallas district.
The election will be called for
Mi ndav, September 7th; as soon
as the proper orders are passed
by the ordinary he will proceed
to advertise the election as re
quired by law.
The s ntiment of the people of
the district seem to be in favor
of adopting the system of taxa
tion and now is a good opportun
ity to carry the election. Where-
■over local taxation has been
adopted in a community it has
been found to greatly aid in edu
cational facilities of the schools,
and in a material way has bene
fited the community.

IF YOU KNEW that your money in bank was 100
per cent safer than in your own possession or in
your home, would you not rush to place it in bank?
We think you would.
Then listen to reason: You cannot afford to
build a fire=proof vault or a burglar proof safe to
keep your money in. If you can it would be as safe as in
bank, except that we carry Burglar insurance and insure
your money in the “Depositor’^j^uarantee
Fund.”
We also pay you a good portion of money in interest
which we are sure you could not get if you stored it away
at home. We have paid out over $1,000.00 in interest since
the first day of January of this year! Our Savings Depart-
ment is growing like wild=fire because our customers who
have benefited by it are talking it to their neighbors and
want them to share in the general prosperity.
Your money is at your disposal at ail times in our bank
and we pay 5 1=2 per cent interest as long as it stays with us.
Can you find a better bank account than we offer? If not,
we would be pleased to have you open an account with us
the very next opportunity you get.
