Mr. Editor:—If you will allow me a little space in your gtfod pa per I will be glad. When I was at home my father -was a sub scriber to your paper, and is yet I guess. I was always glad to see the New Era come. It was a welcome visitor to our home. I will take for my subject, “A Life Worth Living.” The real object of life is hap piness in one form or another. Whatever may be man’s or wo- •man’s conception of true happU ness, and whatever the means employed in this attainment, the fact still remains that as the solid rock foundation supports the pil lar, so the desire to be happy is the basis of all man’s efforts. It has been often said, a life with out a purpose is not worth living, ahd a man never amounts to much till he has been set on fire. If that is the case we need a lot of men to be set on fire. The human notion of happiness is as widely varying in character as it is universal in existence. To some the prize of life is wealth, accompanied by power and social esteem; toothers, fame; to still others the satisfaction of the con- 1 trary passion, affection and ha tred to all success. The young are always pictur-, ing to themselves future of pur ple and' gold. Those day dreams take hold upon the mind of the boys, until at length he becomes possessed by them, and with the enthusi asm of youth determines to real ize them. If of a strong will power and persistent nature he will not be deterred from his purpose by the difficulties in the way. And suppose he has at tained what he would once have said to be the real ^condition un der which happiness may be en joyed. If his purpose has been wealth or fame, does he enjoy Power? Yes! but compared with that pleasure he first thought to Bank of Dallas THE BANK THAT MADE PAULDING COUNTY QROW get out of it, this is not what a, man should call happiuess. It is insignificant, and he lias, as is very often the case, iu the pur suit of the happiness to be had through wealth lost its much de sired setting, the public esteem. He has missed something which he had thought to attain. ‘'When the body hungers we feed it; when the soul hungers we let it alone. We should do the things that satisfy the soul.” .•>-$ The man of this world is un happy. Ho is a man for whom joy is wanting, poetry is stricken out, a man into whose bleak life the beautiful uever enters, the divine yearning never comes. To be happy me must be nat ural. Nature is happiness. Why do we allow the silly gregarious- cess of this world so to hide us at every turn? Real life is the pursuit of the ideal, and of this ideal the char acteristic to be desired—above all others—is individual liberty. Life means many things to me, but it means chiefly this: “To be free,” Freedom does not lie in a cult or in the carrying out of any regular program. By this freedom we do m t mean an ir responsible freedom from cares Rather we mean a freedom which comes from a knowledge of the greatness of individual responsi bility. Christ says: “And ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free.” Again, I say, real life means lib erty; but no one can be free who cannot think and act tor himself. But we should not take disagree ment with our views as necessari ly proceeding from wrong minds. The longei we live, the more we shall see ths^value of a care ful consideration of the other man’s point of view. Yours trnly, John Calvin Ckowlkv. Berry School, Roue, tia. Dailey's Grove. Mr. Ed tor:—Please allow me space in vour valuable paper to say a few wordsjin Prof. Starr’s behalf. It is true that Mr. Starr has been laboring and toiling at this place for the past two years. Ho has strove as hard to see that each and every pupil of this school accomplished something as any one possibly could. He has not only tried to he p us that we might gain more knowledge, but has tried to lead and direct us in the way that we should go. He has created a desire for more knowledge than very likely some of the hoys and girls of this com munity would have ever had without his assistance. We all know that the school at this place was at one time con sidered dead to some extent. He has brought it to the front and is leaving it in a prosperous condi tion. We can’t praise him too much for what he has done at this place. I am confident that he feels an interest in the future welfare tf boys and girls he 1 as taught at this place. I can say, as to my part, that I am going to show him that I appreciate what he has done for me by continuing to press forward. Roland Denton Quick Relief for Asthma Sufferers.
