RUSSELL SWORN IN
AS U. S. SENATOR
Washington, Jan. 12.—While a
group of friends and relatives looked
down from the galleries above for
mer Governor Richard B. Russell, Jr.,
was administered the oath today as
junior United States senator from
Georgia.
Accompanied to the vice president’s
dais by Senator Walter F. George,
of Georgia, Mr. Russell took the oath
immediately after the senate met at
noon. Senator Huey Long, Louisiana
“kingfish,” suspended his’ one-man
filibuster against the Glass banking
bill long enough for the ceremonies to
take place.
Senator Russell succeeds Major
John S. Cohen, of Atlanta, who was
appointed by him to the vacancy
caused by the death of the late Sen
ator W. J. Harris last spring. He
was elected to serve for the remainder
of the Harris term, expiring in 1937.

end with home folks.
