Hints for Homemakers
By Jane Rogers
IN making pastry, roll in one di
rection only. If you roll first
in one direction and then in an
other, your crust is always sure to
be tough. To improve both flavor
and appearance, brush a sugar
syrup over the crust just before
taking from the oven. Make the
sugar syrup by dissolving one-half
cup of sugar in one-quarter cup
boiling water.
When preparing fruit salad,
sprinkle bananas, peaches, pears
and apoles with lemon juice and
sugar, as soon as they are cut.
This helps to prevent discolora
tion.

BY using a screen like this you
can have a little breakfast nook
in your kitchen. You can make the
screen yourself of pressed wood
boards and decorate it to suit your
