Farm Wage Rates
Farm wage rates have reached their highest level
since 1931, according to the Department of Agriculture.
Unfortunately, this does not mean that agricultural lab
or is being paid anything like a wage, comparable to that
available to industrial labor. j
The average farm wage, without hoard, is $1.70 a day,
with extreme limits of less than $1 a day in South Caro
lina and Georgia and $3.15 a day in Rhode Island and
Connecticut.
The welfare of the agricultural population of the Unit
ed States requires that the farm wage rate be increased.
When farm labor gets more money, farm real estate will
be worth more money. Moreover, landlords will share
greatly in the prosperity that will accompany higher
wages on the farms.
German U-Boat Losses
The U-boats of Germany are indicting severe losses
upon British shipping but they are not getting by with
out losses.
Recent dispatches from London indicate that seventy
four German submarines have been destroyed since the
war began. This is a heavy toll because when the war
started Germany was supposed to have only seventy-one
U-boats.
There is no way to ascertain the rate of construction
in Germany and the number of U-boats now available is
unknown. The chances are that Italy has turned over
some of her submarines to Germany and we would not be
surprised to learn, some day, that the Nazis have gotten
hold of some French vessels of this type.

ONE USE OF CLOVER
In the spring, crimson clover can
he turned under as a green manure
crop, E. D. Alexander, Extension
agronomist, says. It is estimated that
a ten-ton-per-acre crop of clover in
cluding roots and tops will add to the
soil the same amount of organic mat
ter contained in eight tons of fresh
barnyard manure. Yields of crops
have been doubled and tripplad due
to use of crimson clover as the green
manure crop. Even though many
crops have been used to follow clover
turned under for soil improvement,
the majority of farmers have conclud
ed that corn is the best crop to use
in this case.

EARLY POISONING PAYS
Usually there is not much move
ment of weevils from; field to field
until the migration period begins
about mid-summer. Therefore, farm
ers who do early poisoning will obtain
protection for their bottom crop re
gardless of whether their neighbors
poison, says E. C. Westbrook, Exten
sion cotton specialist. If only a few
farmers do presquare poisoning,
there will be a larger number of
weevils when migration begins than
there would be if all farmers poison
ed. It will not be necessary to mop
the cotton until just before it begins
to put on the first squares, unless the
weevils are injuring the buds of the
plants.
