RICHARD ALLEN BATESON
The Cumming Methodist church was
the scene of the marriage of Miss
Martha Adeline Brown to Richard Al
len Bateson, of Hibbing, Minnesota,
on Tuesday May 20, at high noon.
Reverend J. W. Segars, of Manchester
performed the ceremony in the pres
ence of relatives and friends.
Miss Mabel Henslee, of Blue Ridge
rendered several selections of nuptial
music before and during the ceremony
Mrs. J. W. Segars sang “I Ix>ve You
Truly” and “Ah, Sweet Mystery of
Life.”
Richard Bird, of Athens served as
best man and Joe Brooks and Ralph
Holbrook of Cumming as ushers.
The bride's only attendant was her
only sister, Mrs. Richard Bird, who
wore navy crepe with white acces
sories. Her flowers were a shoulder
spray of sweetheart roses.
Mrs. Bateson, who entered with her
father. Rev. B. D. Brown, was becom
ingly dressed in a model of light blue
crepe with navy accessories. Her flow
ers were a shoulder spray of purple
throated orchids.
The bride is the eldest daughter of
her parents, who are pioneer citizens
of Forsyth County. Mrs. Bateson at
tended Cumming High School and
Young Harris Junior College, later re
ceiving her A. B. degree from Georgia
State College for Women. Since that
time she has been a teacher in Cum
ming High School and Blue Ridge
High School.
Mr. Bateson is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. R. H. Bateson, of Hibbing, Minn
esota. Mr. Bateson graduated from
Hibbing High School, later receiving
his B. S. with distinction in forestry
from the University of Minnesota. He
is a member of Gamma Sigma Delta,
Honor Society of Agriculture.
Mr. and Mrs. Bateson will make
their home in Hibbing, Minnesota,
where Mr. Bateson is employed by the
Oliver Iron Mining Company.
Mr. Roy Otwell purchased Thos. J.
Pirkle Big Creek farm 2 miles off
Cumming—Atlanta highway which is
one of the largest and best farms in
North Georgia. This farm is known
as the Russ farm. It has been rumor
ed that Mr. Otwell is considering
stocking this farm with White Face
Cattle and thus developing it into a
regular Cattle and Livestock Farm.

with the baccalaureate sermon by Dr.
Harold W. Tribble, of the Southern
Baptist Seminary. Dr. J. Curtis Dixon
vice chancellor of the University Sys
tem of Ceorgia and a member of the
class of 1913, will deliver the annual
alumni address Monday morning.

McCuller of Fltzgeerald and Atlanta
to William James Hughes of Cum
ming and Atlanta which was solemn
ized at a quite ceremony, in the pres
ence of a few intimate friends in
Marietta, Ga., May 10, The Rev. M.
O. Sommers, pastor of the First Pres
byterian Church officiating.
The bride is the daughter of Mr.
J. O. and Mrs. M. Z. McCuller, of
Fitzgerald, where she received her
basic education, graduating from the
Fitzgerald high school in the class of
1936. Afterward she attended Berry
Colleke, Rome, Ga., taking a promin
ent role in both scholastic and extra
curricular activities, and receiving*
her B. S. degree in the class of 1940.
Since her graduation she has held a
position in the accounting department
of the Southern Bell Telephone Com
pany of Atlanta.
The groom is the youngest son of
| Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Hughes, og Cum
• ming, and is a graduate of the Cum
| ming high school in the cclass of
j 1934, and of Berry College in the
l class of 1938. At present he holds a
\ position with the retail credit Com
pany of Atlanta in which city Mr. and
Mrs. Hughes will make their home.

Mrs. Marlon Day, age 63, died Sat
urday May 24 at her home at Alpha
retta Route 2. She is the sister in law
of Mr. Albert Day and Mrs. Sam Por
ter of Cumming and was formerly
Miss Lucy Garrison. She is survived
by her husband and three daughters
