Louie D. Newton
NYAMURAGI
Dr. Arnold T. Ohm, General Se
cretary of the Baptist World Alli
ance, Washington, D. C., spoke at
our church last Sunday morning, re
porting on an extended tour which
he has just completed throughout
Asia, Australia, Africa, Europe and
South America.
He was emphasizing the fellow
ship of our Baptist people n the
many nations of the earth, despite
the barriers of language, geography
etc. And when he got to Africa, he
told the story of Nyamuragi, an 18
year old native boy of Musema,
Urundi.
Nyamuragi was born deaf and
dumb—has never spoken a word or
heard a word. And yet he kept try
ing to persuade the local pastor and
church to receive him and baptize
him. They couldn’t talk with him,
and he could not write. They were
greatly distressed to know whether
he wai really converted and ready
for baptism. They declined tto bap
tize him, but he persisted—making
signs every time they had baptism,
urging them to let him be baptized.
Finally, he walked into the meet
ing house one day, holding a lan
tern in his hand. He walked to the
front, place the lantern in his right
hand and lifting it as high as he
could, placng his left hand over his
heart. The local pastor and the mis
sionary understood —he had receiv
ed the Light of God’s love in his
heart. They baptized him the day
Dr. Ohrn preached in the Baptist
church as Musema, and Dr. Ohrn
said he had never witnessed such a
scene of ‘joy on the part of anyone
being baptized.
Dr. Ohm asked what his name
signified, since all names in this
particular tribe usually symbolize
some trait of the person.
"The dumb one,” they answered.
Even so, the grace of God is suffi
cient to save unto the uttermost.
What man can not do in traversing
the barrier of deafness and dumb
ness, the Holy Spirit can do. This
young man, sorely afflicted, was
loved of God, and he knew that God
loved him—had saved him—and he
wanted to obey the impulse, bom of
God, deep in his heart.
Thus the circle of fellowship wid
ens to include all who will respond
to the love of God. Selah.
Soil Conservation News
Forsyth County
Joel and Bud Heard cooperators
with the Upper Chattahoochee Riv
er Soil Conservation District are
doing an excellent job of clearing
the bottom land along the Setting
down creek of all the brush and
trees. Following the clearing they
are seeding fescue and clover as a
permanent pasture mixture.
R. F. Hardeman near Hurt Bridge
has done a good job of clearing the
bottom land along the creek and
then seeding to fescue and clover.
Others along the creek are making
progress toward clearing and still
others hope to in the near future.
The flood prevention dams on the
Hubbard, Mathieson and Sexton
farms have been completed and seed
ed to grass. The gate has been Clos
ed on the Hubbard dam and the lake
is now forming. Fish have been put
in the lake behind the Hubbard dam.
The flood prevention dam on Starr
creek near Pleasant Grove Metho
dist church is now under construct
ion. This dam is approximately six
miles NW of Cumming and can be
seen from the road that passes by
the church. This is excellent chance
for anyone to see the construction
of a flood prevention dam.
Mr. Roy K. Woods and Mr. F. S.
Henika of the Federal Wildlife De
partment were in the county last
Friday.
