Popularity among truckers of Ford’s C-Serie? cab forward trucks has resulted in the
addition of these two new models to Ford’s 1954 Triple Economy truck line—the C-700
extra heavy duty chassis (left) with deluxe, “driverized” cab and the C-900 with standard
cab. The C-900 has the largest cab forward capacities ever offered by Ford. It has a
maximum gross combination weight rating of 55,000 lbs. Like all Ford C-Series trucks, it
was designed to meet the 45-feet overall length requirements of most states.

U Rheumatic diseases are
the Number One crippler
in the United States.
CO Usually.older people are
bothered by arthritis.
Rheumatism and arthritis are
two different diseases that are
often confused by many people.
They are both members of the
rheumatic disease family the
country's number one crippler.
About 7Mi million people are
affected in varying degrees, ac
cording to the Public Health
Service. They lose an average of
550 million dollars in wages and
spend 100 million for medical
care annually.
Rheumatoid arthritis, popularly
called rheumatism, and osteo-ar
thritis, or degenerative joint dis
ease, commonly called arthritis,
account for 70 per cent of the
rheumatic disease cases. The
causes and therefore the cures for
both of these diseases .are not
known. Doctors recommend treat
ments that consist of rest and
freedom from mental and physi
cal strain, balanced diets, some
exercise, heat application*, and,
in the case of rheumatism, a new
hormone drug.
Rheumatism is the more seri
ous of the two diseases, some
times resulting in deformity and
crippling. It afflicts three times
as many women as men, from 20
to 50 years of age. Rheumatism
usually stalls in the joints of the

by Science Features
Causing inflammation and
swelling of the tissues between
the joints, rheumatism produces
stiffening, and solidity between
the bones. Any motion then
causes pain and the muscles, as a
protective measure, tend to im
mobilize the joint.
Rheumatism was found to re
spond dramatically to hormone
drugs such as Cortril. Clinical re
ports show that people who were
bedridden and unable to move
their joints have been able to hop
out of bed and move normally
again, when treated with this
drug. A hydrocortisone com
pound, it urges the adrenal
glands in,the body to release hor
mones that relieve the inflamed
tissues and permit movement of
•he joint.
\ Arthritis is one of the oldest
diseases, and the most commonly
known member of this group. The
bones of the dinosaurs show the
telltale signs of arthritis and the
ancient human, the Java Ape
Man. also had symptoms. •,
This joint disease affects aging
people and almost 9 out of 10'
over 60 years old have one form
or another. It usually damages
the weight-bearing joints such as
the hips. Chronic irritation or the
wearing away of the joints and the
degeneration ofdhe cartilage and
fibers cause pain and stiffness but
never lead to disability.
