SELFISH, GREEDY AND
GRASPING •
When the Congress of the United States
passes an act and it is signed by the President,
it becomes the law of the land. Most people
respect it. But alas and alack! there are al
ways some who wish to circumvent the law;
question its- intent; distort its purpose.
The Flood Control Act passed by Congress
in 1944 provides PREFERENCE to electric co
operatives and public bodies to power general- »
«d at federally constructed power projects.
Such projects are scattered all over the nation
f and the power generated is being handled
under the ACT OF CONGRESS. In Georgia 1
the great CLARK HILL project now turns out
millions of kilowatts of electricity. Under the
LAW, this electricity belongs to the coopera
tives and public bodies but the power trust
seeks to claim and acquire for its selfish use
benefits which have been computed as being
in the proportion of 10 to 1. This is not right.

ASC NEWS
Wheat Marketing Cards have been
prepared for every farm in Forsyth
County on which wheat was plant
ed in 1954 and were either within
their allotment or within the 15 acre
provision.
One card has already been issued
to Mr. H. D. Nuckolls of Cumming.
Each producer who sells wheat to
any source must have a marketing
card in order to comply with the re
gulations of Wheat Marketing Quo
ta Program.
We have been advised that per
formance work in regard to check-*
ing cotton planted during 1954 will
begin at an early date. It is antici
pated that work should begin about
June 1, 1954. However due to the
extremely wet spring this work may
be delayed in order to give the farm
ers more time to get their seed plant
ed and a stand to be obtained.
Any farmer who requested a
spring practice under the 1954 ACP
Program should report whether or
not this practice has been carried
out in its entirety, or partially by
June 15, 1954 and if the practice *is
only partially compietted an exten
sion of time will be granted in order
to give farmers an apportunity to
complete any started practice with
prior approval,
FORSYTH COUNTY MOSQUITO
CONTROL IN PROGRESS
By T. E. Nelms, Sanitarian
Mosquito Breeding season is here
again and every effort should be
made to keep down mosquitoes.
The kinds of mosquitoes that we
have to worry about here in the
Southeastern part of the United
States and over Georgia is the Ma-
laria bearing mosquito and those
that only disturbes us while we are
trying to sleep or rest.
It is extremely important to exer
cise every effort to control the Ma
laria bearing type since there has
been several cases of malaria here
in the last year or two. When a Ma
laria type Mosquito bites a person
who is a Carrier of Malaria Organ
isms and then bites you, chances are
that you may get enough exposure
by a few bites to develop a good
case of malaria. All of the County’s
87 teachers and their classes are
cooperating with the Mosquito Con
trol program. Each pupil*will keep
a record on the following Mosquito
Control practices to help his or her
class become the winner of their
school.
1. No. of tin can that had holes
punched in them.
2. No. of Staganated ponds spray
ed or drained.
3. No. of ponds restocked or stock
ed for the first time with fish to eat
up mosquito lava.
4. No. of water barrels kept in case
of fire, that were sprayed with oil.
5. No. of branch banks cleared to
create better drainage.
6. Reports on swampland drain
age.
The farmers of Forsyth County
are far ahead of farmers in other
counties in draining swampland for
better pastures. Cor and truck crops
and as a result are making good pro
fits from this type of land whereas
in the past it served only as mos
quito breeding grounds. In the Set
tingdown Creek water shed area, 7
miles of stream channels have been
cleaned of logs and brush that dam
up the streams and cause overflows
from the streams and has created a
faster flow of water and consequent
ly the flow of the streams is in a con
stant process of lowering the stream
bottom.
With the Stream bottom being
lowered, swampland on the streams
will drain when lateral ditches are
cut to the stream. 1000 acres of the
.swampland can be drained in the
Settingdown Creek Water Shed area
for pasture and com crops. 100
acres already has been drained.
The farmers in the Big Creek
Watershed area have observed the
Flood Control and drainage projects
in the Settingdown Creek Watershed
area and have organized 100 per
cent in their community to get their
project underway which will open
up as high as 4000 acres of bottom
land, the largest bottom landarea in
Forsyth County.
