Shopping will noon be less of a
chore for millions of American
housewives, thunks to a new c; ;h
register which takes the guess
work out of change-making.
(’ash registers have always
shown how much the shopper owes
the store. Now a register has been
developed that also shows how
much piango the store owes the
shopper. The new register works
like this:
The salesperson rings up each
item purchased and then takes a
total in the usual way. That is as
far as ordinary cash registers go,
hut the new register takes over
from there.
Suppose the shopper hands the
salesperson a $lO bill to pay. for
purchases totaling $4.18. With a
conventional
jJJgalesperson has to use a psweil t»r
liicky mental arithmetic to figure
the change due from the $lO bill.
The new register, however, docs
tbs' job automatically and more
accurately. The salesperson simply
| rings up the $lO bill and this fig

the register. Then the salesperson
presses a key marked “change.”
i’he register instantly computes
how much change the shopper
should receive, in this rase $5.82,
and showatthis amount.
Thus, there is never any doubt
in th > shopper’s mind about get
ting the r.ght change. She can
easily duck up on the register’s
fast-thinking mechanical brain. All
she h:is to do is examine her re
ceipt, which lists every part of the
transaction.
If the customer hands the sales
person a check in payment for her
purchase, the register takes that
transaction in its stride, too. The
salesperson just rings up the
amount of the check, and the reg
ister then computes the amount of
jyuyuyj'due from the check. *
The new mochanuaVTireln also
gives the shopper credit for any
bottle refunds or trade coupons,
again speeding up service and in
suring accuracy. The register is
the result of extensive engineering
research by The National Cash
