Achievement Pays Off for Georgia 4-H’ers
Ag KRITORIOUS achievement records in the 1954 National 4-H
•I’M- Beautification of Home Grounds, Leadership, and Meat Animal
programs have brought state honors to four club members from
Georgia, A 19-jewel watch was awarded to each. The winners and
some of their major achievements are: •
The State awurd for all-around
accomplishment in the 4-H Meat
Animal program in 1954 went to
Kobert S. Lowrey, Jr., 20, of
Armuchee.
Robert has made a substantial
financial gain, as well as winning
various awards on his livestock.
Profits from his beef animals,
swine and other projects have fi
nanced two years of college.
In 1950 his father bought a
herd of purebred Aberdeen An
gus. Robert bought six head of
the cattle and won reserve cham
pion bull at the Coosa Valley fair.
He has also won awards in judg
ing. He is vice-president of his
club, led by John Selman.
In recognition of his accom
plishments, Thomas E. Wilfion
presented him with a 17-jewel
pocket watch award.

Two 4-H Club members in
Georgia have been named boy
and girl stute winners in the 1954
Leadership program. They are
l'uul Hast, lfi, of Savannah and
Hazel Langley, 18, of Loganville.
In his six years in 4-H activi
ties. Puul has made gardening
and public speaking bis main
projects. Last year garden pro
duce brought him u clear profit
of $484, und he won a $75 prize
this year as Mr. Vegetable Grow
ers state champion. He has held
every office in his 4-H club and
now serves as president.
In public speaking contests
Paul was named district winner
two years and received the state
uwaid this year.
A 4-H’er for six years, Miss
Langley has been an active leader
in community and 4-H affairs.
She served as president of her
local 4-H club four years and then
became a Junior Leader. She is
also president of the County and
district 4-H Clubs. Miss Langley
enjoys Sunday School teaching
and Youth Fellowship in her
church, was editor of her school
paper and valedictorian of her
senior class.
Leadership awards include the
Kitsinger award from the IJni-

For greatly improving his fam
ily’s homestead surroundings, An
thony Tanner, 15, of Tifton, has
been named state winner in the
1954 4-H Beautification of Home
Grounds program.
As part of his 4-H project, An
thony completed an outdoor liv
ing area and added a fish pool,
playground equipment, bird bath,
permanent cement block grill, and
painted all outdoor furniture.
He cleared an area between
outdoor living area and barn for
parking cars and outdoor games.
Anthony improved the lawn by
turning sod, fertilizing, re-plant
ing, and removing trash.
Mrs. Charles R. Walgreen of
Chicago rewarded Anthony’s ef
forts with a handsome 19-jewel
wrist watch appropriately in
