NOTES & COMMENT
Experience is rarely valued by those who need
it most.
Three of a kind: Golfers, fishermen and the
proud parents.
Advertising is the servant of those who know
how to use it.
Thin ice should be avoided by those who want
to enjoy 1955.
Get-rich-quick schemes multiply faster than
the supply of suckers.
We believe in advertising; you might, too, if
you gave it a real trial.
Asking the question is much easier than find
ing the right answer. *
There are selfish people in every community
who still seem to get along.
Trade in Gumming. It pays me, you and every
body who lives here.
You can’ always tell what some people think
by hearing what they say.
The workers who take their work seriously
are the ones who usually have the permanent
jobs.
Flattery is one way some people pave the
walkway of life, but it often costs one more than
it is worth.
Give the other man credit for some sincerity
of purpose and you might be able to understand
him better.
It’s again time for you to make resolutions
for the New Year. Better to make 'em and break
‘em than not to make 'em at all.
There’s one thing about the democratic form
of government: If you don’t like the men in of
fice yu can run for their jobs.
Would-be Spring gardeners are now hopefully
looking forward to the day when they can pick
something out of their own garden.
When any group of men, who put up practi
cally no money of their own, acquire control of
a million-dollar business, it’s time for somebody
to look into the system as it is being worked.
Honest merchants will not take advantage of
the faith of their customers; because of this faith
many Gumming merchants have had remarkable
success in their business.
Gumming might as well make up its mind to
fight out its own battles without waiting on
some industrial Santa Glaus to furnish employ
ment for the people here.

Tip to Farmer»
Long-Lasting
i Chick House
A Better Buy
A farmer can save money on a
brooder house by taking the long
view. Expense should be figured
on the basis of the cost per year
for the life of the unit, not simply
as a lump sum. A well-built
brooder house costing S2OO that
gives 15 to 20 years of service is
more economical than a cheaply
constructed house that gives 6
years of service at an initial cost
of SIOO. *
Sound economy calls for a struc
ture that adequately protects the
poultry investment it houses.
Proper insulation is a “must” for
the close temperature control
young chicks need, as well as for
minimum fuel bills.
If a rounded arch roof is plan
ned, bend sheathing material over
laminated wood arches and cover
it with heavy fire-resistant min
eral-surfaced asphalt roll roofing.
The same material serves equally
well in maintenance of existing

houses. Roll roofing looks Lest and
gives greatest protection from
rain and wind if it is applied by
the “blind,” or concealed, nailing
method. N >
If the house has a gable roof,
asphalt shingles will give long
term protection with minimum
maintenance. For color uniformity
that enhances the appearance of
the entire farmstead, shingles
often are chosen in a color to
match the color of the roofs on
other farm buildings. •
The moisture that collects from
evaporation and droppings is best
disposed of by ventilation. Venii
lation can be systematically con
trolled through damper-controlled
louver openings in front and rear
walls. Stock wood utility sash is
recommended for windows.
A portable brooder house can
double as a range house. For safe
moving, it should be built on two
4-by-fi skids, under 2-by-4 joists
spaced 24 inches on center. The
braces should be screwed to each
joist.
APPLY STAIN EVENLY
For even application of oil or
water stain, a cellulose sponge is
better than a brush or a rag. The
sponge holds a lot of stain with
one dipping and the amount ap
plied may be easily regulated.
The square edges help in working
the stain into corners or along the
edges of a bt»ard.

half in width. The power house will contain three hydroelectric
generators of 16,000 kilowatts each, which will produce 243,000,000
kilowatt hours a year under normal water conditions, or enough
electricity for 75,000 average Georgia homes. The reservoir will be
developed for recreational purposes, such as sailing, fishing, swim
ming, and for private residences.
