Plan Yampa-Lodore Recreation Area
With the passage of the Upper
Colorado River Storage bill, one of
the finest recreation areas In
America will be within a few
years of actuality.
This, the Yampa-Lodore Recrea
tion area in Dinosaur National
Monument, will provide the first
ook at some of America’s finest
and most spectacular canyons for
thousands of tourists, 20 miles up
stream from the dinosaur beds
frcm which the entire mbnument,
gets its name.
The Colorado River and its ma
jor tributaries, the Green, Yampa,
Gunnison, Dolores and San Juan
rivers, are the great canyon-mak
ers of the West; on their way to
the Gulf of California from tne
snow-capped Rockies, these rivers
carve literally thousands of spec
tacular canyons across the hign
plateaus of Colorado, Utah, New
Mexico and Arizona.
The most famous of these can
yons is the Grand Canyon of the
Colorado in Arizona, one of the
major wonders of the world.
Yet there are other canyons, not
quite so spectacular as Grand Can
yon, which are of awe-inspiring
beauty. The deep canyons of the
Green and Yampa Rivers are
among the most spectacular.
Yet because they are located in
the remote fastnesses of the tri
corner area of Colorado, "Utah and
Wyoming, almost inaccessible ex
cept by, horseback, these canyons
have been seen only by a handful
of people compared with the thou
sands who visit other scenic won
ders of the West.
At the time the origtaal 80-acre
site of the dinosaur relics was ex
panded to more than 200.000 acres,

in the monument.
So when President Rooievelt in
1938 issued the proclamation ex
panding the monument, he includ
ed a statement exempting the en
larged area from the provisions of
iaw which prohibit the building of
dams or reservoirs in national
monuments.
Plans Developed
Plans developed over nearly 50
years by the Bureau of Reclama
tion and included in the Upper
Colorado River Storage project,
call for a stream regulation and
power-producing dam at Pat
Lynch Hole, now called Echo
i J ark, 20 miles up the Green Riv
er from the original Dinosaur Mon
ument.
Here a 525-foot concrete dam is
planned at the bottom of the 2,500-
loot deep canyon at Harper’s Cor
ler. The dam will back water up
m fiord-like lakes for more then
j(i miles up the precipitous can
yons of the Green River, and more
than 40 miles up the deep canyons
of the Yampa River.
During the past 20 years, only a
lew hundred people have made the
dangerous (though exciting) trip
down the rapids of the Green and
Yampa Rivers. The. lakes, deep in
the bottoms of these canyons, will
eliminate most of the dangerous
rapids.
In their place will be many
placid pools, excellent for fishing.
Tourists, heretofor barred from the
area by the dangerous river pas
sage and the rugged terrain of the
surrounding mountains, will have
a chance to see the beauty of
these canyons in safety from the
more quiet lakes, in some cases
more than 2,000 feet below the rim
oi the canyon walls.

BEAUTY SPOT—Steamboat Rock, one of the most striking features of the expanded Dinosaur Na
tional Monument in Utah and Colorado, has been viewed by relatively few people. With the con
struction of Echo Park Dam, this and many othn scenic beauties will be open to tourists in safety
and with relative ease.
But to the people of the states
of Colorado, New Mexico, Utah
and Wyoming, the important thing
about the Echo Park Dam and its
beautiful reservoir is not the scen
ic enchantment which visitors will
be able to see for the first time;
the important thing is that the
reservoir will permit them to use
a portion of the water allotted to
the Upper Basin states in the Colo
rado River Compact of 1922.

Altogether, six major dams and
