Many Forsyth County , farmers
have purchased their seed corn for
1955 and are ready to plant. In
most cases they have been able to
find the variety that they wanted.
A few farmers have told me that
they bought th’eir “second choice”
variety while others are still wait
ing and trying to find a dealer
with their first choice.
Such is the case with Coker 911.
Several farmers planted this hybrid
in 1954 for meal and found it very
satisfaettory. So far, I don’t believe
that this variety is available lo
cally this year.
Many farmers have planted one
and only one variety for several
years and have found it to be very
satisfactory. They have not needed
a “second cohice” variety. But ac
cording to recent demonstrations
and tests by experiment stations
there are several varieties of both
white and yellow hybrids that we
may choose from and still get an
high-yielding desirable corn.
Among the white hybrids Geor
gia 101 still ranks near the top
followed by Dixie 33, Dixie 11,
Coker 911, Georgia 103, Funk’s
G-785 and Tennessee .29. A new
variety of yellow corn ranks near
the top this year in Dixie 82.
North Carolina 27 and Dixie 22
are still good risks for a corn
crop. Woods S-20, North Carolina
36 and Funk’s G-714A are also re
commended for this area while
some local farmers are still getting
good yields from Funk’s 711.
From the results of only one
years testing in Forsyth County,
Coker 911 looks as if it might be
the white hybrid that we have been
looking for with a grain firm
enough for milling qualities. The
white cob is also there.
Other varieties have given good
individual yields but the ones men
tioned above are the varieties that
have been tested in our area and
found to be adaptted to our local
conditions. With good management
practices, including adequate
amounts of the right kinds of fer
tilizer, and enough water these
varieties will make an entry in the
profit side of your record book.
ASC NEWS
We would like to remind the
farmers carrying out Practice No.
F-3 for 1954 and F-3b for 1955
that it is against regulations to
harvest seed from this area. A re
fund will be required of any per
son harvesting seed from an area
seeded to F-3 or F-3b.
All persons requesting a New
Growers cotton allotment or addi
tional acreage of cotton should
have received their allotment not
ice. If any doubt about your al
lotment contact the County ASC
Office.
After May 16, 1955 all over plant
ed wheat farms will be revisited
by a reporter to check all wheat
reaching maturity. If you over
planted your allotment and some
of your wheat acreage was dam
aged by the recent freeze you may
destroy the damaged area and
come within your allotment.
All vendors in the County who
have purchase orders for Emer
gency grain please bring them into
the County Office and exchange
them for Dealers Certificates.

with a modern McCulloch Model 33-B Chain Saw and can average
six cords of pulpwood daily per man where formerly it required
two men to produce three cords. ,
The model 33-B weighs only 20 pounds, yet its fine balance and
rugged performance make it just the saw for pulpwood cutters
over a sustained cutting period. And its low cost makes it extra
easy to own. .

You Don't Know
What Lonesome Is
There must be men to hold the lonely jobs,
like tending the lighthouse, looking out
for forest fires, keeping watch over the
cattle and patrolling electric power lines.
While most of our patrol work is done with
airplanes, there are places and times that
call for the man on foot. So he swings along,
a solitary figure set against the long miles.
His eyes are trained to see broken
insulators, burned conductors, slackened
guy-wires, timber near the lines, anything
that could interrupt your electric service.
Line patrol to us is more than a job.
It is a symbol of vigilance. It is a reminder
of our duty to fulfill your trust
by serving you well.
