REV. G. W. FORHfeST RECEIVES
MANY CONGRATULATIONS
The Second Baptist Church had
a good congregation Sunday morn
ing April 24, at 11:00 at which
time Rev. G. W. Forrest known by
many of his close friends as Rev.
Greonberry preached an old-time
heart warming sermon.
Brother Forrest has been preach
ing almost 50 years, during which
time he has served many churches
in North Georgia. He has married
hundreds of couples and preached
hundreds of funerals and visited
and ministered to thousands of
sick people and I am sure has had
the joy and thrill of leading thou
sands to Christ.
It has boon my pleasure to know
and to love Brother Forrest, Mrs.
Forrest and their entire family
some 35 years since he has lived
in Forsyth County and I person
ally know that he has served well
his churches and fellowman ail
these years and much of the time
paying his own expenses out of
funds earned by him from doing
carpenter work and other manual
labor when not actively engaged
in ministerial work.
During the Horse and Buggy
days I have know him to drive his
own horeses many miles in all
kinds of weather to serve churches
and to preach many sermons when
he would not receive any pay at
all and during automobile days
I have known him to furnish his
own gas and oil and other auto
mobile expenses to preach many
sermons and many funerals when
he would not receive enough mon
ey to pay his expenses. Like many
other of our dear old preachers
he has given his entire life to that
of the Lords work and helping
others and has lived a very unself
ish life among us.
Brother Forrest has been very
active in Masonic and other frater
nal orders and I feel sure the con
gratulations, the compliments and
th£ honors boslowed upon Brother,
Forrest at his church last Sunday
are all due him and even more
and I feel sure that all of the
many preachers, deacons and mem
bers of all the churches in For
syth County join me in paying
tribute to Reverend and Mrs. G. W.
Forrest.

BUFORD—CUMMING TELE
PHONE DIRECTORY FEATURES
NEW LOOK COVER
A cule little blonde with a yel
low scarf around her neck has
shoved “ELEC" the nude winged
statue with the lightning forks in
his hand, off the cover of the new
1955 Southern Bell Telephone Dir
ectory which is being distributed
in Buford.
In all some 3,226 copies of the
new look directory will be distri
buted to Buford and Cumming sub
scribers, according to L. H. Collins,
managegr of the Telephone Com
pany.
Nicknamed the “Spirit of Com
munications,” ELEC has graced
the covers of Southern Bell Tele
phone Company directors for 16
years. The new cover is being add
ed as a "Symbol of Progress,”
Cbompany officials said.
When your new book arrives,
discard the old one as several num
bers in it have been changed and
new ones added since last year,
Collins urged.
ELEC, the old cover trademark,
was a copy of a 24-foot bronze
Statue, weighing 16 tons, which
was placed on top of the American
Telephone Company building, Oct
ober 24. 1916. according to L. H.
Collins, manager.
A contest staged by A. T. & T.
in 1914 to find a suitable statue
was won by Mrs. Nathaniel H.
Batchelor of Osterville, Mass. A
sculptor better known as Evelyn
Beatrice Longman.
Her husband's father, Henry M.
Batchelor, figured in the first news
paper story ever sent into a City
desk over the telephone. It ttook
place in the laboratory’ of Dr. Alex
ander Graham Bell in 1877, and A.
B. Fletcher of the Boston Globe
became the first rewrite man as
he took the story dictated over
the phone.
