With y our County
Agent
Walter H. Rucker
A number of Forsyth County
farmers have expressed Interest in
the campaign to wipe out Brucel
losis (Bang's Disease) In cattle.
This is a national program with
practically the entire 48 states co
operating in an effort to eradicate
this disease in our cattle. Addition
al federal funds have been made
available and veterinarians’ fees for
testing cattle and the cost of the
vaccine used in the program will
be paid from these? funds. Also,
farmers ran receive indemnity pay
ments for animals slaughtered Ire
cause of Bang’s. Up to twenty-five
dollars will he paid for grade ani
mals and up to SSO for purebreds.
Georgia is taking the lead in the
testing program with approximate
ly 50,000 -animals check in March.
Tire most tested by any other state
during one montli this year was
25,800.
The most surprising thing about
the 50,000 checked here in March
is that only 1.87 percent of them
actually had Brucellosis. The Inci
dence of the disease in 42,000 cows
tested in February was only two
percent. This is a lower incidence
of Bang’s than was previously
thought tto exist. However, this is
no reason to let up in the fight
against the disease. It’s all the
more reason to step up the cam
paign, while we have Bang’s on
the run.
The farmer has his choice of
four plans under the present setup,
but he Is encouraged to carry out
one of two. One plan calls for test
ing of cattle with permanent iden
tification and prompt disposal of
reactors for slaughter only, with
or without vaccination of calves.
The other recommended plan calls
for cale vaccination without test
of any part of the herd.
This is not a campaign to wipe
out Bang’s in any one type of cat
tle. The family milk cow is just as
importaant as the commercial dairy
or beef herd. One diseased annimal
can spread the disease to an en
tire herd or even to the neighbor
ing farms.
To participate in this program a
farmer should contact his veteri
narian with a request that his ani
mals be tested or vaccinated. The
veterinarian will make all neces
sary tests (without cost to the far
mer) and advise him of any reac
tors orsuspects of Bang’s. The ear
lier that this is done the more ef
fective will be the campaigng.

Constructed as the result of a gift of $25,000 by the Georgia Power
Company, it is named in honor of Charles A. Collier, former vice

stroke in the industry (that means
less piston travel... longer
engine life)! And it deliv

low-priced field. It’s so
efficient that it requires
only four quarts of oil in
stead of the usual five...
needs less radiator cool-
