GEORGIA DELAYS POLIO SHOTS
AT FEDERAL REQUEST
The state’s Salk polio vaccination
program has been temporarily halt
ed due to a recommendation from
a U. S. Public Health Service ad
visory committee.
Speaking for the State Health
Department polio committee, Dr.
T. F. Sellers, State Health Director
says that "even though we have
given the vaccine to 170,000 first
and second grade children with no
harmful results, we shall follow
the recommendation of the Public
Health Service, now conducting ex
tensive re-checks on each “lot” of
polio vaccine.
Delay in giving the second polio
vaccination to first and second
graders should not nullify the ef
fectiveness of the fif'st shot already
given, Sellers states.
“Three weeks was set in Georgia
as the minimum time interval be
tween the first and second polio
sot,” Dr. Sellers added. “This does
not mean that waiting an addition
al length of time will render the
first shot ineffective: it just means
that a longer time must elapse
before the child receives the pro
tective benefit of two doses of vac
cine.” He stated that the first shot
merely “sensitizes” the child, or
prepares the body for production
of antibodies, with effective im
munity occurring some two weeks
after the second injection.
Dr. Venable says that we have
had an unusually high rate of
polio this year in Georgia among
children not receiving the Salk
vaccine. There have been five such
cases of polio in G'eoTgia since
April 18.
Dr. Sellers also stated that local
health departments will soon be
queried by the State Health De
partment as to quantities of vac
cine needed in their local areas
for children not able to afford the
vaccine. Such information will be
turned over to the Georgia Advis
ory Committee.

Welcome home, Baby! Your lovely nursery is waiting for you, thanks
to your mother’s handiwork in decorating with a self-adhesive plastic
fabric in a colorful new toy print.
This new product waterproofs the walls behind the bathinette. To
keep everything gay, the chest.and kitchen stool are decorated with pink
and white striped “Con-Tact” to match a scalloped border that extends
iround the three painted walls.
Do-it-yourselfers give first consideration to the self-adhesive plastic
product because it applies easily to plaster, wood or metal without re
moving varnish or paint. No tools, water or paste are needed. Con-Tact
can be lifted and replaced to remove wrinkles and air bubbles. The
plastic product is available in 35 vibrant colors Und fresh prints.
