Suggestions For Traffic Safety Cited By HD Agent “What kind of gas mileage does your car give?” Mrs. Zelma R. Bannister, home demonstration agent for Forsyth county, says that question—asked so often—might have a better ans wer if drivers compared speed with economy and safety. Tests reported by the National Safety Council comparing a top cruising speed of 65 miles per hour with one of 40 miles per hour showed tthe higher speed to be much more costly, the home agent said. “Gas consumption increased 30 percent at the higher speed; oil consumption increased 50 percent. Tire wear was two and one-half times as greaat.” Tests over city routes comparing top speeds of 25 and 35 miles per hour, showed that 20 percent more gas was consumed at the 35-mile per hour speed than at the 25-mile j per hour speed, Mrs. Bannisted ad ded. . | Pointing out the relation of speed to safety, she stated that a speed ing car travels a greater distance .between the time the brakes are [applied and the time the car stops than a slower-moving vehicle trav els in the same time. “Remember too, the faster the speed, the hard er you hit if an unavoidable object is in your path. In other words, if you double your speed, you’ll hit four times as hard.” The agent said Home Demon stration Club members in Forsyth county are especially interested in safety because the National Home Demonstration Council is conduct ing a traffic safety contest. Awards ranging from SIOO to $25 will be made to the safety chairman of state home demonstration council whose efforts have resulted in the greatest number of local clubs ac tively engaged in promoting ef fective traffic safety programs.
