NOTES & COMMENT
Those who were longing for hot weather back
in January are now satisfied, we hope.
The best way ti make Gumming a good town
is by making yourself a good citizen
For every 100 persons who read a book to get
a little scandalous excitement, there may be one
to read a volume to get some intelligence.
The emphaasis n passing other cars, and
speed, by automobile manufacturers is misplac
ed, we think.
Peoples are not equal and anyone who con
fuses equal opportunities with absolute equality
is off the deep end.
We are often mystified by television and the
movie dialogues which lead nowhere with a
great flourish
♦
Laws are passed to be enforced but some peo
ple seem to have forgotten that theory-espec
ially as it applies to them
A business is only as good as the person run
ning it, and that’s why businessmen are unpre
dictable, over the long haul.
The pretty girls are about through with bath
ing beauty congests and male fans will .have to
wait for another summer to come around
Every man who starts a new business expects
to revolutionize the trade but, in the end, he re
volutionizes his own opinion.
Advertisers ught to appreciate that they pay
for circulation; circulation worth having is paid
for by those who read a newspaper.
For every person in Gumming who has secur
ed something for nothing, there are about 153
who have lost something for nothing.
4 ■ ———
The man who in his business resorts to tricks
and doubtful practices need not wonder why his
son grows up to be a downright crook.
The truth will make nations, as well as indi
viduals, free; and you depend upon a free press
for tthe truth in this country.

If the New York Yankees do not win the pen
nant in the American League this year, a lot of
people will not recognize the World Series for
what it is
The world is filled with two classes of people
those who take pleasure in paying their bills,
and those who take pleasure in not paying their
bills.
Gumming would be greatly improved if all
owiers of houses would have them repaired,
painted and renovated. You would hardly re
cognize the place.

Cough Control
P The cough is a pretty complicated
phenomenon that can have plus or
minus value for us. On the one hand,
it’s one of the principal devices for
protecting the lungs against foreign
material like a particle of soot or
too much mucus. And on the other,
it’s a common and troublesome
symptom of illness.
Since coughing
is a result of irri
tation of the
throat or bron
chial passages, it
has as many dif
iferent causes as
there are differ
.ent irritants.
'Dust, for in-
L “"s Kbb
stance, or hot dry air and, of course
smoking. Asthma, lung or chest in
fections, disorders of the nerves in
volved in the cough reflex, or ear
disorders can all cause coughing.
Coughing can even be a matter of
habit, like a facial tic.
Physicians place coughs in two
classes, productive and unproduc
tive. The former helps clear ob
structions, especially of mucus. A
cough may be unproductive because
there’s no obstruction to remove, or
you may not be able to cough as
hard as necessary. •*
I In treating cough the physician
tries to end the unproductive kind
or to make it productive and then
stop it as soon as its usefulness is
over. Drugs that will supprer?.
cough by hitting at the cough reflex
are the object of intensive labora
tory research. Codeine used to be
the main cough-suppressant but it
was never satisfactory because of
its narcotic nature as well as un
desirable side-effects.
* Researchers in recent years have
been screening large numbers of
chemical compounds to find non
narcotic anti-cough drugs. Early
this year an effective and safe drug
called Toclase was discovered to act
specifically and swiftly on the cough
reflex. Clinical tests showed there
was no danger of addiction and that
it caused no drowsiness or constipa
tion. '

m Antibiotics In Industry
” Millions of lives have been saved
by antibiotics, but these earth-mold
drugs may also be put to such di
verse uses as keeping food fresh
longer, prolonging the life of leath
er, and revolutionizing the cosme
tics industry. ' i
Such antibiotics as penicillin,
streptomycin, polymyxin and baci-
tracin are finding
startlingly broad
applications. By
serving as effi.
ciency experts,
for example,, they
may help raise
our standard of
living. Experi
ments show the
F W
antibiotics make silkworms produce
silk more quickly, and speed up the
honey output of bees.
Some antibiotics are proving suc
cessful in reducing the mildew on
surface coatings, and making shoes
and purses wear longer. Others
are useful in eliminating bacteria
that clog up machinery.
In agriculture, antibiotics have
been spectacularly successful in in
creasing the production of food ani
mals and crops. Poultry and hogs
are being produced more cheaply,
because animals raised on an anti
biotic-supplemented diet grow fat
ter and healthier and are ready for'
market sooner.
Agri-mycin field trials were re
cently conducted by the U. S. De
partment of Agriculture. The trials
proved the effectiveness of this anti
biotic combination in drastically
cutting down on the bacterial dis
eases that ravage whole crops.
Current experiments raise hopes
that the drugs also will help keep
food fresh longer. Terramycin,
tested on fish, greatly reduced its
“spoilage” rate.
The day may soon come when an
tibiotics will be as valuable for non
medical use as they are today for
fighting infections.
