] NOTES & COMMENT
It usually gets down to a cat-fight, even in the
best of families, when the greenback is involved
These comments are not necessarily the most
brilliant ever penned; we are not that far at sea
Current prosperity is incomplete, and the
country's farmers know where the catch is
When an individual decides that it is time to

is making some progress in life
Report: So far, we have observed no lighten
ing of our work due to the discovery of the ato
mic bomb.
Apropos of modern education: How many
college graduates keep up with any subject for
as long as three years after leaving college?
As far.as we are concerned, an individual can
be as radical as he pleases, as long as he does
not use force to gain compliance to his views
Broadway plays are usually a waste of time,
despite the fact that so many people attend to
merely say they saw this or that in New York
The man from Mars, if he reaches the U. S.
'A. during a presidential campaign, would think
that all men were liars
Who can remember the old days when a long
distance phone call, or a telegram, was an omen
of disaster of death?
Thomas Jefferson is one American whose
words and works bear close study by those who
belong to no privileged group
It is permissible occasionally to forget your
engagements but it’s worse to forget your hon
esty and what you have learned
* Some of the friendships that one runs across,
in this vale of teal’s, are as strange as the enmi
ties that often amuse spectators
Traffic fatalities continue to proclaim the
need for strict enforcement of regulations de
signed to make modern motor travel, safe for
the people

The unusually cool weather that
we enjoyed for so long this spring
and summer also proved very com
fortable for boll weevils and other
cotton insects. We probably have
the heaviest infestation of aphids,
thrips, bollworms and boll weevils
that has occurred in Forsyth Coun
ty in recent years.
The only way to determine wheth
er or not your cotton is infested
is to make periodic checks in the
field. Every field should be inspect
ed at least every 5 to 7 days.
Practically all of our crop insects
can be checked by application of
the proper insecticide at the prop
er time. The same insecticide will
not control all insects. It is neces
sary that we first determine what
insect is damaging our crops and
poison accordingly.
Many of the insecticide are avail
able both in dust and liquid forms.
The liquid is applied as a spray
and has several advantages over
dusts. Sprays can be applied ef
fectively in wind up to 20 rrjijes
per hour. This permits sprays to
be applied all day long on most
days. Insecticides applied as sprays
are not as easily washed off the
plants by rain or blown off by
wind and other air movements.
Sprays also seem to be more eco
nomical and effective than dusts
for early season control when the
plants are small. However, sprays
should not be applied when plants
are wet with rain or dew.
Toxaphene and BHC are prob
ably the two most widely used cot
ton insecticides. Aldrin, dieldrin,
heptachlor, endrin, parathion and
malathion are effective when used
for certain insects. DDT will give
effective control of cutworms and
sulfur will eliminate the spider
mite. None of the above Insecti
cides will control all of the insects.
The proper Insecticide must be se
lected to give effective control.
Circular 372, entitled ‘‘Cotton In
sect Control’’, printed by the Geor
gia Agricultural Extension Service
will give the answer to most of
the questions. It is available free
at your county agents office.
